Saucony Kinvara 8 vs. Saucony Freedom ISO review

Saucony Kinvara 8 is good for performance runs by runners who want to feel light and fast. Saucony Freedom ISO is like the Kinvara but with a different midsole and upper.

The Saucony Kinvara 8 and the Saucony Freedom ISO are both neutral cushioning running shoes from Saucony that have a lot in common because both are geared toward performance runs.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The uppers of both running shoes have been kept light, with the difference that the Saucony Kinvara 8 comes with very light overlays in addition to mesh, while the Saucony Freedom ISO only comes with mesh.

Except for an overlay at the front in the form of a toecap, the Saucony Freedom ISO The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com does not have overlays that wrap the midfoot, although the mesh can be pulled tight through the laces.

Another difference between the Saucony Kinvara 8 and the Saucony Freedom ISO is the fact that the Saucony Freedom ISO has a Support Frame at the back that wraps around the heel to keep it in place.

The Saucony Kinvara 8 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com only comes with extra pieces of sturdier material on the medial side of the heel and the lateral side of the midfoot to help keep your foot on the platform.

All in all, you should be able to get a similar amount of support from the upper of either running shoe, i.e. lightweight support.

Both the Saucony Freedom ISO and the Saucony Kinvara 8 come with EVERUN in their midsoles.

However, while the Saucony Kinvara 8 has an EVERUN topsole – a thin layer of extra cushioning at the top of the midsole – the Saucony Freedom ISO has a midsole that consists entirely of EVERUN.

One would expect the Saucony Freedom ISO to be more cushy than the Saucony Kinvara 8 due to this difference, and Saucony also lists the Saucony Freedom ISO as providing plush cushioning, while the Saucony Kinvara 8 is listed as providing cushioning that is firm and responsive.

The results from running shoe lab tests paint a different picture, though.

Running shoe lab tests show that while the Saucony Freedom ISO and the Saucony Kinvara 8 display similar cushioning profiles, the Saucony Kinvara 8 is the one that provides more cushioning in both the heel and the forefoot and to both men and women.

Both running shoes lie way above average in the amount of cushioning they provide, so you should be able to get a soft ride whether you choose one or the other.

The Saucony Freedom ISO sits a bit lower on the ground (it has a slightly thinner midsole) than the Saucony Kinvara 8, and it also has a smaller heel-to-toe drop, so brings you closer to a neutral plane than the Saucony Kinvara 8 does.

The heel-to-toe drop is about 5.6 mm for men and 5.5 mm for women in the Saucony Kinvara 8, and about 4.9 mm for men and 4.7 mm for women in the Saucony Freedom ISO.

The Saucony Kinvara 8 sits about 1.3 mm in heel and 0.4 mm in the forefoot higher off the ground for men. For women, the numbers are 1.7 mm and 0.9 mm, respectively.

Judging from these numbers, the Saucony Kinvara 8 has a slight advantage at being more responsive than the Saucony Freedom ISO.

The Saucony Freedom ISO and the Saucony Kinvara 8 do not come with any extra support in their midsoles because they are running shoes for neutral runners who do not need such support.

However, they both provide full ground contact that helps increase the stability of the running shoes and also helps them deliver smoother heel-to-toe transitions.

Both running shoes are rated as providing an average amount of stability to runners, with the Saucony Freedom ISO providing just a tiny bit more than the Saucony Kinvara 8.

The Saucony Kinvara 8 only comes with durable rubber in high-wear areas, while the rest of the outsole is exposed midsole material.

The Saucony Freedom ISO comes with a kind of see-through rubber in its entire outsole, which should provide a bit more durability than the outsole of the Saucony Kinvara 8.

The outsoles of the two running shoes display a similar zigzag pattern, which helps with the flexibility of the running shoes.

However, while both running shoes have been found to provide an above average amount of flexibility, running shoe lab tests rate the Saucony Kinvara 8 as being a bit more flexible than the Saucony Freedom ISO for both men and women.

Both running shoes are very flexible for women and display an almost equal amount of flexibility. There are slightly larger differences in flexibility to be noted for the men's versions of the running shoes.

The women's version of the Saucony Kinvara 8 weighs approximately 6.8 oz (193 grams), and the Saucony Freedom ISO for women weighs about 7.5 oz (213 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 8.0 oz (227 grams) and 9.3 oz (264 grams), respectively, with the Saucony Kinvara 8 being the lighter one.

The Saucony Kinvara 8 and the Saucony Freedom ISO come very close to providing the same running experience to neutral runners.

However, if numbers and tests are anything to go by, the Saucony Kinvara 8 has a small advantage over the Saucony Freedom ISO at giving runners who are after performance what they need in weight and responsiveness.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
