The New Balance 1540v2 is the updated version of the New Balance 1540. They are motion control running shoes that are meant to be worn by excessive overpronators who require lots of stability and support.

The first thing New Balance has done with the New Balance 1540v2 is change its look.

The New Balance 1540v2 The preceding link takes you to looks more "open" – so more breathable – than the New Balance 1540.

This is mainly due to the placement of the overlays in the upper. The overlays on the New Balance 1540v2 are a bit thinner or narrower than those on the New Balance 1540, therefore exposing more of the breathable mesh.

However, the reduction in bulkiness of the overlays does not come at the price of less support in the upper of the New Balance 1540v2, since there are still sturdy stitched-on overlays wrapping the midfoot as they did in the New Balance 1540.

In addition, the bunion window of the New Balance 1540v2 is now free from overlays covering it, so your foot should feel very comfortable in that area if you have big bunions.

The New Balance 1540v2 continues to have no-sew overlays in between the stitched-on overlays to provide more structure to the upper, just like the overlays in the New Balance 1540 did.

Another big change New Balance made was to the midsole, where they upgraded the Rollbar that is located on the medial as well as the lateral sides of the shoe.

The Rollbar in the New Balance 1540v2 differs from that in the New Balance 1540 in that it has been flattened out a bit in the New Balance 1540v2 compared to that in the New Balance 1540.

Because it has been flattened out, it is also a bit wider and provides more gradual motion control than the Rollbar in the New Balance 1540.

The function of the Rollbar has remained the same, which is to provide motion control both when your foot pronates (rolls inward) as well as when it supinates (rolls outward), making the New Balance 1540v2 the perfect running shoe for people who have mechanical issues.

Besides the change in the Rollbar, the firmer foam that lies above it has also changed in that it does not reach as high under the foot as it did in the New Balance 1540.

This could mean that the degree of motion control in New Balance 1540v2 might be a bit less stronger than in the New Balance 1540, but with such a change, the New Balance 1540v2 should feel less clunky than the New Balance 1540, and the motion control feel more gradual than in the New Balance 1540.

The last change New Balance made to the New Balance 1540 to create the New Balance 1540v2 was to the outsole.

The New Balance 1540v2 still has a wide, flat, and very stable base just like the New Balance 1540, but the configuration of the rubber in the outsole has completely changed.

While the outsoles of both running shoes consist of a combination of blown rubber and durable rubber in high-wear areas, the New Balance 1540v2 has flex grooves running from side to side in its forefoot.

This should help with the back-to-front flexibility of the shoe. The flex grooves in the New Balance 1540 do not run from side-to-side, but there is enough separation in the rubber lugs to give you flexibility.

However, both the New Balance 1540v2 and the New Balance 1540 are geared towards heavier runners, who generally are not after flexibility, but more support, which both running shoes can deliver.

The New Balance 1540v2 for women weighs approximately 11.3 oz (320 grams) and the New Balance 1540 for women weighs about 12 oz (340 grams).

The New Balance 1540v2 for men weighs approximately 14.6 oz (414 grams) and the New Balance 1540 for men weighs about 14.8 oz (420 grams).

As you can see from the weights of the running shoes, the New Balance 1540v2 got slightly lighter than the New Balance 1540.

This is mainly thanks to the possitive changes New Balance made to the New Balance 1540 to produce the New Balance 1540v2. You have a more breathable and less clunky running shoe in the New Balance 1540v2.

The New Balance 1540v2 is a running shoe that comes closer to what a normal running looks like, while still providing you with maximum support in its upper as well as in its midsole.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
