New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 provides a secure fit with a touch of stability. Saucony Triumph ISO 4 delivers a soft and smooth ride to neutral runners on long runs...

The Saucony Triumph ISO 4 and the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 are neutral cushioning running shoes for runners who do not need much stability and support and who are rather looking for a good amount of cushioning.

The uppers of the Saucony Triumph ISO 4 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 differ quite a bit in their use of overlays.

The New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com comes with a couple of stitched-on overlays that connect the saddle to midsole towards the back and front of the running shoe.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 4 does not come with stitched-on overlays but has ISOFIT around its midfoot.

While the no-sew overlays on the Saucony Triumph ISO 4 do not connect the saddle to the midsole, there are underlays that do the work.

The overlays at the bottom of the saddle of the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 are shaped in a way to open up room in the forefoot for big bunions, and no overlays run on the toe box itself due to the use of engineered mesh that is meant to deliver structure and support.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 4 also makes use of engineered mesh but still has a no-sew overlay running on top of the toe box above the big toe and underlays that run across the bunion window.

Therefore, while it might look like both running shoes have an upper that is quite open, the Saucony Triumph ISO 4 might be the one to provide a more custom fit while trying to minimize irritation.

In other words, the upper of the Saucony Triumph ISO 4 might wrap your foot better, while that of the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 might deliver more durable support.

The New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 might be more durable with its use of stitched-on overlays.

Sturdier stiched-on overlays are used at the back of the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 to provide a good amount of support in that area.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 4 has a Support Frame at the back, but it does not cup the heel as well as the overlays on the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8, and it seems more lightweight.

Therefore, the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 is expected to deliver more support around the heel.

The midsoles of the Saucony Triumph ISO 4 and the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 differ in construction.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Saucony Triumph ISO 4 comes with a softer layer of foam at the top of the midsole, while the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 has one main layer of foam as its midsole.

Nonetheless, lab tests have found both running shoes to deliver a good amount of forefoot cushioning and they lie in a similar range.

However, the amount of heel cushioning is more moderate in the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 than it is in the Saucony Triumph ISO 4, which can be seen to also have a cushy heel.

Therefore, your ride would be overall cushier in the Saucony Triumph ISO 4 than it would be in the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8.

The New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 has a slightly lower heel-to-drop than the Saucony Triumph ISO 4, but the difference is not big, just about 1 to 2 mm.

Both running shoes provide a good amount of ground contact so are capable of delivering smooth heel-to-toe transitions.

This ground contact also increases the stability of the New Balance 1080v8 and the Saucony Triumph ISO 4, but because they are neutral running shoes, you should not expect them to deliver an amount that a stability running shoe would deliver.

The rubber outsoles of the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 and the Saucony Triumph ISO 4 differ quite a bit from each other.

The New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 has narrow flex grooves, which are not plentiful in the forefoot, and while it has small rubber pods throughout its entire outsole, lots of rubber will prevent it from being a flexible running shoe.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 4 has vertical flex grooves in its forefoot, and while the rubber is cut horizontally in a zigzag pattern, such a setup would not make a running shoe flexible.

Lab tests have found both the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 and the Saucony Triumph ISO 4 to be on the stiff side for both men and women, but stiffness does add some stability to running shoes.

The women's version of the Saucony Triumph ISO 4 weighs approximately 9.5 oz (270 grams), and the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 for women weighs about 8.8 oz (249 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 11.3 oz (320 grams) and 10.8 oz (306 grams), respectively, with the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 being the lighter one.

If you are a neutral runner who is looking for a smooth and comfortable ride, you could choose either the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 or the Saucony Triumph ISO 4.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 4 delivers an overall softer ride than the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8, and it has a more lightweight upper that might provide a more custom fit.

The New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v8 has durable support in its upper, a good amount of support around the heel, and sits a bit lower on the ground than the Saucony Triumph ISO 4.
