Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 vs. 10 review

Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 is a lightweight stability running shoe with a much more supportive upper than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10. But there is more you should know...

NEW! Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 vs. 11 and Mizuno Wave Inspire 13 vs. Mizuno Wave Inspire 12

The Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 is the updated version of the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10. Both are stability running shoes that can be worn by runners who moderately overpronate.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The biggest difference between the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 and the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 is in the upper.

While both running shoes have a mainly no-sew upper with breathable mesh, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 has more stitched-on overlays than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10.

The Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 has very light welded-on overlays running across the midfoot to provide support in that area. And the Mizuno logo on the lateral side of the shoe merely provides structure to the upper to keep it in place.

All this has changed in the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11. The Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 has the Mizuno logo on both sides of the shoe, and the logo connects the midsole to the saddle, so provides you with a better lockdown.

In addition, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 has a fairly broad no-sew overlay on the lateral side of the shoe that again runs from the saddle to the midsole and provides more support around the midfoot.

And on the medial side Mizuno has added two stitched-on overlays that pull the top of the saddle down towards the midsole. Since stitched-on overlays provide more support than no-sew overlays, and due to the rearrangement of the overlays when going from the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 to the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11, you can expect to get a much more secure fit from the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 than you would get from the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10.

The overlays on the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 are just much more strategically placed to provide the kind of support overpronators tend to need and want in an upper.

But having increased the amount of stitched-on pieces in the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 caused it to increase its weight a bit, but not a whole lot, so it is a very small price to pay to get a whole lot more support.

The midsole of the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 is an exact replica of that of the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 with the one difference that it is a little bit thinner.

The Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 still has a U4ic midsole that provides cushioning with a Wave Plate in the heel that provides shock absorption at heel-strike, and that fans out into two waves on the medial side of the midsole to provide pronation control.

But the thickness of the midsole of the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 in the forefoot is 0.9 mm less for men and 0.3 mm less for women, which means that especially for men you should feel a difference in the amount of forefoot cushioning.

The Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 should feel firmer in the forefoot than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 for men.

In the heel, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 lost 0.2 mm of height in the women's version and 0.5 mm in the men's version. However, running shoe lab tests have revealed that the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 has a more cushy heel than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 for men, but a much less cushy heel for women.

So if you are a female heel-striker, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 would be the better option to go with. And if you are a male heel-striker, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 would give you more protection from the road.

What running shoe lab tests have also revealed is that the both running shoes are almost equally as flexible for women – which means very flexible – but that the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 is much more stiffer than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 for men.

So if you are a man looking for a very flexible running shoe, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 would be the one to go with. For women, this would be the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11.

The women's version of the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 weighs approximately 7.4 oz (210 grams), while the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 for women weighs approximately 7.5 oz (213 grams). The men's version of the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 weighs about 9.3 oz (264 grams), and the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 for men weighs 9.5 oz (269 grams).

The Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 is a much more stable and supportive running shoe than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10. While it has gained a bit a weight, it resembles its predecessor a lot.

However, there are a few things you should consider – such as flexibility and the amount of cushioning mentioned previously in this article – if you are looking to make a choice between the two and depending on whether you are a man or a woman.

If you are a woman, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 provides overall more cushioning but is just a tiny bit less flexible and supportive than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11.

And if you are a man, flexibility and support would be the main things to choose between. If you want a very flexible but less supportive running shoe, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 would give you that. And if you are looking for stiffness and lots of support, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 11 would give you that.

Where the amount of cushioning is concerned in the male versions of the shoes, the big difference lies in the forefoot. So if you want a cushy forefoot, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10 could deliver that.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
