Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 vs. Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS review
Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 is a favorite trainer among runners who require maximum stability in a comfortable and responsive motion control running shoe. Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS offers superior motion control, a smooth, cushioned ride, and a supportive, comfortable upper that locks the foot down and keeps it in place. Learn how these two running shoes differ and where they are similar.
In two previous articles I wrote about the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 and the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS motion control running shoes for women.
The Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 is the flagship motion control running shoe from Mizuno, while the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS is also the main motion control running shoe from Saucony. So theoretically speaking these two sneakers should stack up well against each other.
The Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 and the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS (the newest model of which is the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS 2) are made by two different running shoe manufacturers, so they will naturally be different. Let's compare them and take a look at where they are similar and how they are different.
Looking at the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 and the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS side-by-side gives a good comparison of the two types of motion control running shoes.
Looking at the uppers, we can see that both the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 and the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS consist of breathable mesh with synthetic overlays.
Both uppers have synthetic overlays that wrap around the midfoot to provide a secure fit, but the reinforcement of the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS around the midfoot is slightly more pronounced than that of the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4, which has more mesh than overlays in that area. So the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS is expected to provide a more secure fit in that area.
The overlays around the heel and in the forefoot area do not differ much, but again, the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 has a mix of mesh and overlays in both of these areas, while the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS only has overlays. All in all, while the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS may feel tighter on your feet, the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 may feel looser and airy.
If we now look at the midsoles, we can see many similarities between these two motion control running shoes. For starters, both have a plate that runs all the way from the heel to the forefoot and which provides motion control and stability in addition to the medial post under the foot's arch which minimizes the degree of overpronation.
So both trainers are expected to provide you with a similar amount of motion control as well as a smoother transition from heel strike to toe off.
The outsoles of the two running shoes also look quite similar, but still there are a few differences to be noted. For starters, the heel and forefoot area on the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS are separated on the lateral side of the shoe, which means that if you tend to land on the outsides of your heels and then transition inward, which is the case for most overpronators, the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS will absorb shock better than the Mizuno Wave Renegade would.
Another difference between the outsoles of these two motion control running shoes lies in the flex grooves in the forefoot. The Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS again has more segementation in this area meaning that it is expected to provide you with more flexibility than the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4.
And finally, the heel of the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS also has more crash pads on the lateral side, which again means that it is expected to better absorb shock than the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4. The amount of durable rubber is slightly more on the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 than on the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS, so the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 would win in the department of lasting longer and giving you more mileage.
The Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS weighs approximately 332 grams (11.7 oz), which is 9 grams (0.3 oz) heavier than the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4, which weighs 323 grams (11.4 oz) when you compare motion control running shoes by weight.
If you're looking for a relatively light, durable, and airy motion control running shoe that provides good motion control in addition to a smooth transition from heel strike to toe off, then the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 is worth looking into.
If you're looking for a flexible motion control running shoe that provides a secure fit and good shock absorption in addition to a smooth ride from heel strike to toe push off, then the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS might be the sneakers for you.
The suggested retail price of the Mizuno Wave Renegade 4 is US $119.95, which is almost $5 more expensive than the Saucony ProGrid Stabil CS when you compare motion control running shoes by price.
