In two previous articles I wrote about the New Balance 587 and the New Balance 1011 for women.
These two running shoes are from the same manufacturer (New Balance), so they'll typically have the same shoe technology applied to them. Nonetheless, these running shoes are different, so let's compare them and take a look at how they differ.
Both the New Balance 1011 and the New Balance 587 running shoes have a Rollbar, which is a plate that is designed to keep the foot in a neutral plane during the gait cycle. However, the main differences between the two motion control running shoes are in the designs of the sole and uppers.
The New Balance 1011 seems more suitable as a running shoe based on the contour of the outsole. It has a nice thread in alignment with the gait cycle when running and provides good support on the inside and outside of the foot. The outsole of the New Balance 587 is more linear and provides more of an evenly distributed support platform than a nice ride.
While the outsole of the New Balance 1011 follows the natural shape of a foot, the outsole of the New Balance 587 tends to align well with the shape of wide and a flat foot. The New Balance 587 does not become very narrow towards the toe box meaning that it might feel more roomy than the New Balance 1011.
The New Balance 1011 is approximately 2 grams (0.1 oz) lighter than the New Balance 587 when you compare motion control running shoes by weight. Both are sturdy enough to support someone who is on the heavy side.
Looking at the uppers of the two running shoes, it is immediately visible that the New Balance 1011 has more mesh than the New Balance 587, which would make the New Balance 1011 more breathable (an asset if you're living in a place with warm climate), but somewhat loose around the feet.
However, it makes up for the looseness with its N-LOCK integrated lacing and webbing system, which delivers an optimal fit, support and security.
Both shoes offer a snug fit their bands, so they'd both keep your feet well in place as you run or walk.
If you're looking for a motion control running shoe to run in and want to choose a good New Balance shoe, the New Balance 1011 seems ideal for runners who are heavy, tend to overpronate, and have a wide forefoot and narrow heel. While it is a bit lighter than the New Balance 587, its suggested retail price is US$10 higher than that of the New Balance 587 when you compare motion control running shoes by price. On the other hand, if you have a flat arch, wide feet, and are looking for a shoe that provides lots of stability, comfort, room, and support while you're walking or at the gym, the New Balance 587 could provide a more suitable fit.
