NEW! Brooks Transcend 3 vs. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 17 and Brooks Transcend 4 vs. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 17

The Brooks Transcend 3 and the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 fall in the support category of running shoes from Brooks, but differ considerably from each other.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The uppers of the Brooks Transcend 3 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 are alike in that they both have a minimum amount of stitches.

The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com has a couple of relatively broad no-sew overlays connecting the saddle to the midsole and another few wrapping the toe box. The only stitches are at the back and front of the shoe.

The Brooks Transcend 3 has three layers of mesh in its upper with none having stitches in them. All of the support provided by the upper comes from the mesh and internal overlays, which wrap the foot like a spider web.

Then at the back of the shoe the Brooks Transcend 3 cups the heel well with a sturdy heel counter.

All in all, both the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 and the Brooks Transcend 3 may turn out delivering a similar amount of support through their uppers, but the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 may feel a bit tighter and more secure, especially in the forefoot area.

While both the Brooks Transcend 3 and the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 provide heel-to-toe cushioning, the Brooks Transcend 3 is built with cushioning that is more plush than the cushioning used in the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16.

Therefore, one would expect the Brooks Transcend 3 to be overall more cushy than the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16.

Running shoe lab tests show that this is indeed the case. The Brooks Transcend 3 is super cushy for men with huge differences to be noted between the two running shoes, especially in the heel where the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 may feel a bit firm to men.

The differences between the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 and the Brooks Transcend 3 are smaller for women, but the Brooks Transcend 3 still outcushions the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16.

What is also different between these two Brooks stability running shoes is the way they provide stability and support.

The Brooks Transcend 3 provides discrete stability and support through the use of Guide Rails at the sides of the top of the midsole. These Guide Rails help align your foot and motion path as you are going through the gait cycle.

The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16, on the other hand, implements a more traditional medial post that is quite long and consists of several densities to deliver more gradual pronation control.

Another difference between the two running shoes can be found in the full-length well-segmented crash pad that the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 has on the lateral side of the midsole. This crash pad helps you achieve smoother transitions from heel-strike to toe-off.

The Brooks Transcend 3 does not have such a full-length crash pad, but provides more ground contact – especially under the midfoot – than the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 and has a small area under the heel that is well-segmented to serve as a crash pad, so these features should also benefit the smoothness of your ride.

Both the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 and the Brooks Transcend 3 have a good amount of segmentation and separation going on in their outsoles to deliver a good amount of shock absorption and dissipation.

They both also have many small rubber pods in their outsoles, but those of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 are smaller and more plentiful.

Another difference is that the outsole of the Brooks Transcend 3 is divided into three separate zones to distribute pressure, the Brooks Transcend 3 has a much smaller and rounded heel than the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16, and a bit of a widening under the midfoot.

All in all, the Brooks Transcend 3 is clearly geared toward making your run more pleasant by reducing stress on your joints and providing a better alignment in addition to its plush ride and interior.

While the heel of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 does not provide better alignment or does not take stress off joints, it does provide a more stable platform, since it is wider than that of the Brooks Transcend 3.

Running shoe lab tests have shown that the Brooks Transcend 3 is a tad less flexible than the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 for both men and women with both running shoes being on the stiff side.

The women's version of the Brooks Transcend 3 weighs approximately 9.2 oz (261 grams), while the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 for women weighs approximately 9.5 oz (269 grams).

The men's version of the Brooks Transcend 3 weighs about 11.4 oz (323 grams), and the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 for men weighs 11.1 oz (315 grams).

If you are an overpronator who is looking for a very plush ride from a running shoe that provides comfort as well as a touch of stability, then the Brooks Transcend 3 is definitely worth looking into.

However, if you need tons of stability and support along with a smooth ride, the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 might be able to do a better job than the Brooks Transcend 3.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
