Brooks Transcend 2 vs. 3 review

Brooks Transcend 2 provides a comfortable ride with support you barely notice. Brooks Transcend 3 introduces a flashy new look with more heel cushioning for a softer ride...

NEW! Brooks Transcend 3 vs. Brooks Transcend 4 and Brooks Transcend 4 vs. Brooks Transcend 5

The Brooks Transcend 3 is the updated version of the Brooks Transcend 2, which is a running shoe that falls in the stability category, and that provides lots of cushioning.

The Brooks Transcend 3 The preceding link takes you to has a new look compared to the Brooks Transcend 2.

This is mainly due to a change in the mesh in the upper and the fact that the bands that wrap the midfoot in the Brooks Transcend 2 have been removed from the Brooks Transcend 3.

However, the Brooks Transcend 3 now comes with laser-cut mesh that provides an excellent fit around your foot and keeps it in place.

Both the Brooks Transcend 2 and the Brooks Transcend 3 have a layered upper with a boot on the inside, a layer that provides structure and support, and an outer thin veil-like layer.

The back of the Brooks Transcend 3 has also changed a bit compared to the Brooks Transcend 2 to match the look of the rest of the shoe, but both have a sturdy heel counter to keep your heel in place.

All in all, though, you might get a slightly more secure fit from the Brooks Transcend 2 than from the Brooks Transcend 3 due to its midfoot bands.

The midsoles of the Brooks Transcend 2 and the Brooks Transcend 3 consist of Super DNA, which provides 25% more cushioning than Brooks' standard BioMoGo DNA found for example in the Brooks Ghost or the Brooks Adrenaline GTS.

So naturally, these Brooks running shoes are expected to feel soft under your foot.

Running shoe lab tests show that while both running shoes display an equal amount of forefoot cushioning for both men and women, the Brooks Transcend 3 exceeds the amount of cushioning that is provided in the heel by the Brooks Transcend 2.

This difference should be felt more by men than by women. The Brooks Transcend 3 displays an overall more balanced cushioning profile than the Brooks Transcend 2.

Other than the amount of cushioning added to the heel of the Brooks Transcend 3, the rest of the midsole has remained largely unchanged.

Both the Brooks Transcend 2 and the Brooks Transcend 3 have Guide Rails running along the upper edge of the midsole to keep your foot centered on the platform and help your body move in its natural motion path. This is the main stability feature of the Brooks Transcend.

Both running shoes also provide full ground contact under the arch and the rest of the shoes to increase the stability provided and also allow them to offer you a smoother ride.

The rubber outsole of the Brooks Transcend 3 has changed slightly compared to that of the Brooks Transcend 2.

Both running shoes have a rounded heel that helps provide better alignment and stress reduction on joints. However, the rubber in the heel of the Brooks Transcend 3 is more segmented, especially on the medial side, so allows for more shock dissipation at touchdown.

Both running shoes have three separate zones under the foot to distribute pressure. However, the midfoot zone of the Brooks Transcend 3 has been widened a bit on the inner and outer edges, which should increase the stability of the running shoe a bit.

And finally, the rubber lugs have changed in the Brooks Transcend 3, with them being slighly larger in the forefoot. In addition, the flex grooves also run differently in the Brooks Transcend 3 than they do in the Brooks Transcend 2.

But all this does not matter, because running shoe lab tests show that both running shoes are equally stiff for both men and women. Such stiffness can be handled and is generally appreciated by heavier runners.

The women's version of the Brooks Transcend 2 weighs approximately 9.5 oz (269 grams), while the Brooks Transcend 3 for women weighs approximately 9.2 oz (261 grams).

The men's version of the Brooks Transcend 2 weighs about 11.7 oz (332 grams), and the Brooks Transcend 3 for men weighs 11.4 oz (323 grams).

The features and general properties profile of the Brooks Transcend 3 match those of the Brooks Transcend 2, which is a good indication that Brooks has not changed this running shoe much.

However, Brooks has done a really nice job to make the Brooks Transcend 3 look flashy, while increasing its heel cushioning, the smoothness of the ride it provides, and some extra stability touches here and there.
