Saucony Triumph ISO 3 vs. Brooks Ghost 9 review

Saucony Triumph ISO 3 adds plushness, a secure fit, comfort, and flexibility to your runs. Brooks Ghost 9 provides an overall soft and comfortable ride with a touch of stability.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 3 and the Brooks Ghost 9 fall in the same category of neutral running shoes for runners who have a normal gait and who are looking for a good amount of cushioning.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The uppers of the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 and the Brooks Ghost 9 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com are quite different because the Brooks Ghost 9 does not have visible stitches in its upper, while the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 comes with stitches in its overlays that wrap the midfoot and the heel.

This increases the amount of support offered by the upper of the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com, and due to the fact that these overlays are placed toward the back of the upper, they keep the forefoot quite open and free.

So while the no-sew overlays in the Brooks Ghost 9 may be good not to cause irritation, the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 places its overlays strategically so that they do not cause irritation either.

Both running shoes come with a type of mesh that has a structure that reduces the need for overlays, especially on the forefoot, so should offer comfort in that area.

But because the Brooks Ghost 9 has some no-sew overlays running on the bunion window and the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 does not, the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 might offer more comfort in that area if you have big bunions.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 3 comes with a Support Frame at the back, but the Brooks Ghost 9 has enough overlays at the back to also provide a good amount of support there.

Overall though, the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 might be able to give you a more secure fit around the midfoot and more comfort in the toe box compared to the Brooks Ghost 9.

Both the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 and the Brooks Ghost 9 offer a good amount of cushioning to runners, but the Brooks Ghost 9 was never meant to be super cushy like for example the Brooks Glycerin.

Therefore, it is expected to deliver less cushioning than the Saucony Triumph ISO 3.

However, running shoe lab tests show surprising results, where the Brooks Ghost 9 provides a large amount of heel cushioning and just a tiny bit more than the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 in both the men's and women's versions of the shoes.

Where the Brooks Ghost 9 lags behind is in the amount of forefoot cushioning. The amount of forefoot cushioning is above average in the Brooks Ghost 9, but it cannot compete with the almost maximum amount of forefoot cushioning offered by the Saucony Triumph ISO 3.

So the conclusion is that the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 provides an overall very soft ride and that the Brooks Ghost 9 is a good running shoe for heel-strikers.

What the Brooks Ghost 9 has that the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 does not is a full-length crash pad on the lateral side of its midsole.

This crash pad runs from heel to toe and offers not only smooth transitions from heel-strike to toe-off but also increases the amount of stability offered by the Brooks Ghost 9.

Running shoe lab tests also consider the Brooks Ghost 9 to be much more stable than the Saucony Triumph ISO 3.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 3 also provides full ground contact, which contributes to the smoothness of your ride and also adds some stability to the running shoe, which is why running shoe lab tests has the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 as providing an average amount of stability.

The outsoles of the two running shoes look quite different. The Saucony Triumph ISO 3 has a zigzag pattern in its forefoot with a good amount of flex grooves and separation, while the Brooks Ghost 9 has smaller rubber pods everywhere in its outsole and somewhat less deep flex grooves.

Perhaps it is not so surprising then that running shoe lab tests indicate that the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 is a very flexible running shoe, while the Brooks Ghost 9 falls on the stiff side for both men and women.

Nonetheless, the large degree of separation in the outsole of both running shoes should benefit the smoothness of your ride.

The women's version of the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 weighs approximately 8.7 oz (247 grams), while the Brooks Ghost 9 for women weighs approximately 9.0 oz (255 grams).

The men's version of the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 weighs about 10.8 oz (306 grams), and the Brooks Ghost 9 for men weighs 10.5 oz (298 grams).

If you are a neutral runner who is looking for a soft and smooth ride from a running shoe, either the Brooks Ghost 9 or the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 could give you that.

Just keep in mind that the Saucony Triumph ISO 3 offers more forefoot cushioning than the Brooks Ghost 9, and that the Brooks Ghost 9 provides lots of heel cushioning.

And if you are a neutral runner who appreciates getting some stability, you may want to consider the Brooks Ghost 9 more than the Saucony Triumph ISO 3.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 3 is a good running shoe for larger runners because it provides a secure fit and support to runners who might have larger feet. It is also good if you want to add more flexibility to your runs.
