NEW! Brooks Ariel 16 / Brooks Beast 16 vs. New Balance 1540v2

The Brooks Beast 14 (or the Brooks Ariel 14 for women) and the New Balance 1540v2 are motion control running shoes for runners who severely overpronate.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Both the Brooks Beast 14 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the New Balance 1540v2 come with broad and sturdy overlays that wrap the midfoot and give you support where you generally need it most.

The main difference is that the sturdier overlays on the Brooks Beast 14 are more pulled back than those on the New Balance 1540v2 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com. This opens up the forefoot of the Brooks Beast 14 / Brooks Ariel 14 for comfort.

While the midfoot overlays continue around the heel, the overlays on the New Balance 1540v2 tend to do a better job of also wrapping the heel.

Another similarity between the Brooks Beast 14 and the New Balance 1540v2 is that both have no-sew overlays running on the toe box.

However, the Brooks Beast 14 has more of those overlays than the New Balance 1540v2, thereby allowing the New Balance 1540v2 to offer a more open bunion window.

But while you may experience more comfort on the medial side of the forefoot of the New Balance 1540v2, the lateral side might feel a bit tighter due to the stitched-on overlays that covers the little toe area.

All in all, both the New Balance 1540v2 and the Brooks Beast 14 / Brooks Ariel 14 provide a good amount of support to accommodate overpronators.

Both the Brooks Beast 14 and the New Balance 1540v2 provide heel-to-toe cushioning through their midsoles and both are stability running shoes that come with a device on the medial side of the midsole to help stop your foot from rolling too far inward.

This device consists of several densities of foam in the Brooks Beast 14 and is reinforced by a midfoot shank that hooks into the medial post like a web with pillars to provide more support.

Most of the support provided by the Brooks Beast 14 is concentrated on the medial side of the shoe and centered between the arch and the back of the shoe. The pronation control should be gradual due to the different densities of foam used.

The New Balance 1540v2 comes with a rim of firmer foam that goes around the heel and runs higher on the medial side than it does on the lateral side.

The firmer foam in the midsole is reinforced by a device that lies under the heel and controls the movement of the foot on both sides of the shoe.

So unlike the Brooks Beast 14 / Brooks Ariel 14, which only provides pronation control when the foot rolls in, the New Balance 1540v2 provides control for both overpronation and underpronation, so when the foot rolls inward and outward.

Therefore, the stabilizing effect of the New Balance 1540v2 is greater than that of the Brooks Beast 14. The New Balance 1540v2 is suitable for people who have very unstable feet or inward as well as outward stability issues.

The support provided by the New Balance 1540v2 is also more located under the heel than under the arch although the firmer foam does cover a large area by going slightly past the arch.

Another difference between the midsoles is the crash pad that runs along the outer edge of the Brooks Beast 14. This crash pad runs along the entire length of the midsole on the lateral side.

You should not only get a soft landing from the Brooks Beast 14 but also a smooth transition to toe-off thereafter. Because the New Balance 1540v2 does not come with such a crash pad, the Brooks Beast 14 is more likely to give you a smoother ride.

However, the New Balance 1540v2 provides more ground contact than the Brooks Beast 14 / Brooks Ariel 14, especially under the midfoot. This adds stability to the New Balance 1540v2 but also somewhat increases the smoothness of heel-to-toe transitions.

Both running shoes have a fairly straight platform so are suitable for people with wide or flat feet.

The Brooks Beast 14 has more segmentation and separation in its outsole, which should aid with shock absorption and the flexibility of the running shoe. The New Balance 1540v2 has a more all-in-one outsole that is flatter and less separated.

The New Balance 1540v2 for women weighs approximately 11.3 oz (320 grams) and the Brooks Ariel 14 for women weighs about 12.0 oz (340 grams).

The New Balance 1540v2 weighs approximately 14.6 oz (414 grams) and the Brooks Beast 14 weighs 13.8 oz (391 grams), so the weight difference is negligible.

If you are an overpronator looking for a running shoe that provides tons of stability and support, you could choose either the Brooks Beast 14 / Brooks Ariel 14 or the New Balance 1540v2.

If you are strictly an overpronator, the Brooks Beast 14 might be more suitable than the New Balance 1540v2. The Brooks Beast 14 / Brooks Ariel 14 might also be better to get a softer and smoother ride.

The New Balance 1540v2 is good for people who both overpronate and underpronate or who have severe stability issues.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
