Learn about the difference between Brooks Addiction 9 and Brooks Ariel '10 in this review, and compare prices to find the best deal.

In two previous articles I wrote about the Brooks Addiction 9 and the Brooks Ariel motion control running shoes for women.

The Brooks Ariel is a heavy-duty, mother of all mothers motion control running shoe from Brooks, so one would expect it to be superior to the Brooks Addiction 9. While both running shoes are made by Brooks, they differ quite a lot. Let's compare these two motion control running shoes and take a look at where they are similar and how they are different.

Looking at the Brooks Addiction 9 and the Brooks Ariel side-by-side gives a good comparison of the two motion control running shoes.

Looking at the uppers, we can see that both Brooks motion control running shoes consist of breathable mesh and a good wrapping with synthetic overlays especially around the midfoot. But if you look closely, you will see that the Brooks Ariel has slightly more overlays, meaning that it will give you a more secure fit.

Turning our attention now to the midsoles, we can see that both running shoes have a device (Rollbar) to control pronation. And both consist of BioMoGo in the midsole, so there aren't many differences there.

What is different however, is that the Brooks Ariel has full-length gel cushioning in its entire midsole for impact absorption, comfort, and protection, while the Brooks Addiction does not. On the other hand, the Brooks Addiction 9 has what is called HydroFlow in the heel and forefoot, which are viscous fluid units to enhance midsole cushioning in the heel and forefoot.

The outsoles on both Brooks running shoes consist of a durable rubber compound, which covers almost the entire outsole, so both running shoes are expected to last long. What the outsole of the Brooks Ariel has that the outsole of the Brooks Addiction 9 does not have however is a skid-resistant rubber compound that gives you traction in wet-dry conditions and which is also environmentally friendly.

Continuing to analyze the outsoles, we can see that the outsole of the Brooks Ariel is more segmented than that of the Brooks Addiction 9. The outsole segmentation on the Brooks Ariel is not only between forefoot and heel, but also between individual crash pads in the heel. Therefore, the Brooks Ariel is expected to better absorb shock and not affect your ride. This makes the Brooks Ariel more suitable to run in than the Brooks Addiction 9, which is a great motion control shoe to walk in.

The Brooks Ariel also has more flex grooves in the forefoot, which means that it should provide you with more flexibility in that area than the Brooks Addiction 9.

The Brooks Addiction 9 weighs approximately 10.6 oz (301 grams), while the Brooks Ariel weighs approximately 12.3 oz (349 grams), so is 1.7 oz (48 grams) heavier than the Brooks Addiction 9 when you compare motion control running shoes by weight.

If you're looking for an environmentally motion control running shoe, you could go with either the Brooks Ariel or the Brooks Addiction 9.

If you're looking for a lightweight motion control running shoe by Brooks that has several features that the Brooks Ariel also has but not all of them, and that is good to either walk or run in, the Brooks Addiction 9 would be the sneakers to go with.

If you don't mind the weight of your running shoes, the Brooks Ariel is a good option if you're not only looking for motion control, but also a secure fit, flexibility, good shock absorption, good cushioning, and a slip-free running session.

The suggested retail motion control running shoe price of the Brooks Addiction 9 is US $100, which is US $30 cheaper than the Brooks Ariel, which costs around US $130.
