ASICS GT-2000 5 is supportive and provides enough cushioning for long runs. ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 provides softness, comfort, and a touch of stability to overpronators.

The ASICS GT-2000 5 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 are running shoes that fall in the stability category and that can be used for long runs.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The ASICS GT-2000 5 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 have a lot in common, but the main difference is that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 uses more premium materials.

In addition, ASICS lists the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 as a running shoe that can also be worn by neutral runners, while the ASICS GT-2000 5 is listed as only for overpronators.

Differences start in the upper, where one can immediately see that the ASICS GT-2000 5 provides a bit more support through the use of more no-sew overlays around the midfoot than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 has more no-sew overlays where it matters, though, that is, on the medial side of the upper.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 also keeps the forefoot a bit more open than the ASICS GT-2000 5, so the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 might feel a bit more comfortable in that area, especially to runners who have large bunions.

Another difference at the front, is that the ASICS GT-2000 5 comes with a stitched-on toecap, while the the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 comes with a no-sew toecap, which means that the upper of the ASICS GT-2000 5 might be a bit more durable than that of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

Both running shoes come with a sturdy external heel counter at the back so should offer a similar amount of support there, although the ASICS GT-2000 5 comes with some extra stitched-on overlays wrapping the heel.

All in all, the ASICS GT-2000 5 should provide a more secure and supportive fit than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23, but the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 might feel a bit more comfortable and unrestricted than the ASICS GT-2000 5.

The midsoles of the ASICS GT-2000 5 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 look very similar in what they provide to runners.

Both come with two layers of foam and both come with GEL cushioning in both the heel and the forefoot although the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 exposes some of its GEL in the forefoot and the ASICS GT-2000 5 does not.

The main difference is that the midsole material differs between the two running shoes.

Another difference is that the female version of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 comes with 3 mm extra height in the heel to take stress off the Achilles tendon. The ASICS GT-2000 5 does not come with this extra height.

This allows the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 to provide quite a bit of heel cushioning to women.

According to running shoe lab tests, both running shoes provide a lot of forefoot cushioning to women, but the ASICS GT-2000 5 provides just a little bit more forefoot cushioning than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

However, women will get much more heel cushioning from the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23, although both running shoes provide an above average amount of heel cushioning to women.

The difference in forefoot cushioning is not big for men, with both running shoes providing an above average amount.

However, while the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 provides an above average amount of heel cushioning to men, the ASICS GT-2000 5 lies below average so has a heel that could feel a bit firm to some male runners.

What is similar is that both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 and the ASICS GT-2000 5 have a support system in place on the medial side to help stop the feet of overpronators from rolling too far inward.

This support system includes a midfoot shank that rises quite high up in the midsole of both running shoes and connects the medial side to the lateral side right under the midfoot.

Both the ASICS GT-2000 5 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 are meant to offer a moderate amount of support to runners, but because ASICS seems to place the ASICS GT-2000 5 a bit higher where stability is concerned, it is expected to provide more stability and support than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

This observation is in line with the conclusion one can make from analyzing running shoe lab test results.

Both the ASICS GT-2000 5 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 come with a typical-looking ASICS outsole that has a vertical flex groove and a standard amount of horizontal flex grooves with durable slabs of rubber.

Running shoe lab tests have found the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 to be quite flexible for both men and women, while the ASICS GT-2000 5 is just a tad stiffer than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 for both men and women.

The women's version of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 weighs approximately 9.4 oz (266 grams), and the ASICS GT-2000 5 for women weighs 9.8 oz (278 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 11.5 oz (326 grams) and 11.2 oz (318 grams), respectively, with the ASICS GT-2000 5 being the lighter one.

If you are a moderate overpronator who is looking for a soft ride from a stability running shoe, you could go with either the ASICS GT-2000 5 or the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

The overall package of the ASICS GT-2000 5 provides somewhat more support and that of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 provides somewhat more comfort and luxury.
