ASICS GT-2000 2 vs. ASICS GT-2000 3 review

ASICS GT-2000 2 already provided good stability and cushioning to mild overpronators. ASICS GT-2000 3 takes this a step further with more support, comfort, and softness...

NEW! ASICS GT-2000 3 vs. ASICS GT-2000 4 and ASICS GT-2000 4 vs. ASICS GT-2000 5

The ASICS GT-2000 3 is the upgraded version of the ASICS GT-2000 2, which is a running shoe for neutral runners to mild overpronators.

ADVERTISEMENTS

ASICS wanted to really open up the forefoot in the ASICS GT-2000 3 to provide more room and use less stitched-on overlays to avoid irritation.

And when you compare the uppers, you can see that the ASICS logo has shifted a little towards the back of the ASICS GT-2000 3 and that the overlays on the lateral side of the shoe are almost all no-sew, but that ASICS maintained the stitched-on overlays on the medial side to provide the support that overpronators need in the upper.

So the toe box of the ASICS GT-2000 3 should feel a bit roomier than that of the ASICS GT-2000 2, if not a bit less constricted.

In addition, ASICS added a new heel counter at the back of the ASICS GT-2000 3. So the ASICS GT-2000 3 should provide you with a firmer lock down around the heel.

The midsole of the ASICS GT-2000 2 has also been updated in the ASICS GT-2000 3. It has a new FluidRide midsole that is somewhat lighter, but that still has bounce back and cushioning properties.

And there is still GEL cushioning in the heel and in the forefoot, but if you look closely at the lateral side of the heel of the ASICS GT-2000 3, you can see that the GEL is sandwiched between two layers of foam – the top one being the softest – and more or less oozing out of the midsole.

This is a good indication that ASICS upped the heel cushioning a bit, so you can expect to get much softer landings from the ASICS GT-2000 3 than you did previously from the ASICS GT-2000 2.

When you turn to the medial side of the shoe, you can also see that the medial post in the midsole under the arch that is used to control pronation, now extends more towards the top of the midsole than it did in the ASICS GT-2000 2 and that the softest layer of foam right under the foot is thinner in that area.

This is a good indication that ASICS also upped the amount of pronation control provided by the ASICS GT-2000 3, so the ASICS GT-2000 3 offers way more support than the ASICS GT-2000 2.

The Guidance Trusstic System has also been updated in the ASICS GT-2000 3. There is a new midfoot shank that should provide you with better structural midfoot support and torsion, as well as a new Guidance Line that should better enhance your gait and provide you with the ultimate ride.

The rubber lugs under the heel of the ASICS GT-2000 3 are more segmented than those under the ASICS GT-2000 2. In the ASICS GT-2000 2 there are four rubber compartments under the heel. The ASICS GT-2000 3 also has four, but two of them have been cut to make them six in total. This should provide you with better shock absorption at heel-strike, so overall smoother landings.

The layout of the rubber lugs in the forefoot also changed somewhat due to the new Guidance Line. And while the amount of horizontal flex grooves have remained the same in the ASICS GT-2000 3, the rubber lugs have been cut differently crosswise instead of horizontally and vertically, which does not encourage flexibility.

And running shoe lab tests have shown that the ASICS GT-2000 3 is much stiffer than the ASICS GT-2000 2.

The height of the ASICS GT-2000 3 has also changed a bit. It sits about 1 to 2 mm higher off the road in the heel and 2 mm higher off the ground in the forefoot. So you can expect to get more protection from the road when running in the ASICS GT-2000 3.

The women's version of the ASICS GT-2000 2 weighs approximately 9.2 oz (261 grams) and the ASICS GT-2000 3 for women weighs 9.1 oz (258 grams). The men's versions of the shoes weigh 11.0 oz (312 grams) and 11.1 oz (315 grams), respectively.

The ASICS GT-2000 3 offers much more stability, support, and cushioning than the ASICS GT-2000 2. Except for perhaps the increase in stiffness, almost all of the changes can be seen as positive. And for the same price as the ASICS GT-2000 2, the ASICS GT-2000 3 is hard to pass up on.

The ASICS GT-2000 3 is a good high-mileage trainer that can be worn on a daily basis, because it's just comfortable, cushy, and stable.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
