ASICS GT-1000 4 vs. ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 review

ASICS GT-1000 4 is a good entry-level running shoe that provides a good amount of support. ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 provides a soft ride with stability and comfort to overpronators...

The ASICS GT-1000 4 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 are both stability running shoes for moderate overpronators with the difference that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 uses more premium materials than the ASICS GT-1000 4.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The uppers of the ASICS GT-1000 4 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 are similar in that they both implement mesh that have structure that provides some degree of support and wraps around the foot.

The main difference is that the ASICS GT-1000 4 has stitched-on overlays wrapping the midfoot, whereas the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com has no-sew overlays doing the same.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 does come, however, with a stitched-on overlay that connects the top of the saddle to the midsole and back of the shoe.

And then at the back, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has an external heel counter for added support behind the heel. Such a heel counter is missing on the ASICS GT-1000 4, which just implements stitched-on overlays that have the same function as the stitched-on overlay in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

The ASICS GT-1000 4 provides a good amount of support around the midfoot and back of the shoe, while the support tends to be heavily focused more toward the back of the shoe in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

Both running shoes have a toe box that should feel quite comfortable due to the minimum amount of overlays and an open bunion window.

Both the ASICS GT-1000 4 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 provide heel-to-toe cushioning through their midsoles.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 comes with a softer layer of foam closest to the foot and a more responsive one closest to the ground. And then there is GEL cushioning between those two layers to soften your landing at heel-strike and provide softness throughout the transition to toe-off.

The ASICS GT-1000 4 is a little bit different in that it has one main layer of foam with a crash pad and GEL cushioning in the heel to soften your landing.

The GEL cushioning in its forefoot is not visible on the outside like it is in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22, which may suggest that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has a cushy forefoot.

Running shoe lab tests confirm that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has a cushy forefoot for both men and women but that the amount of forefoot cushioning is about the same in both running shoes.

However, big differences can be noted in the heel cushioning of the ASICS GT-1000 4 versus that of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 displaying a good amount of heel cushioning for both genders.

And since the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 comes with an extra 3 mm of height in the heel for women, the amount of heel cushioning is almost to the max for women.

The ASICS GT-1000 4 does not come with an extra 3 mm of height in the heel for women, and running shoe lab tests show that the ASICS GT-1000 4 may even feel a bit firm to women in the heel.

The ASICS GT-1000 4 provides somewhat less heel cushioning than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 for men. The amount of heel cushioning in the ASICS GT-1000 4 is above average, though.

Because both running shoes are stability running shoes, they come with a support system on the medial side of the midsole. This support system runs a bit higher in the ASICS GT-1000 4, since it does not have a second layer of softer foam on that side of the midsole like the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 does.

This is also perhaps the reason why running shoe lab tests rate the ASICS GT-1000 4 as offering more stability than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

Both running shoes have a midfoot shank that connects both sides of the shoe to provide more support, and a vertical flex groove that helps with gait efficiency.

The rubber compartments under the two running shoes also have a similar layout and amount of flex grooves although the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 is better cut than the ASICS GT-1000 4.

The latter is perhaps also the reason why the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 comes out as being the more flexible one for both genders. The ASICS GT-1000 4, on the other hand, is rated by running shoe lab tests as being on the stiff side for both men and women.

The women's version of the ASICS GT-1000 4 weighs approximately 9.3 oz (264 grams) and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 for women weighs 9.6 oz (272 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 11.8 oz (335 grams) and 11.6 oz (329 grams), respectively, with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 being the lighter one.

If you are a mild to moderate overpronator who is looking for a moderate amount of stability and a very soft and plush ride, then the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 would be worth considering. Women may particularly like the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

However, if you are just looking for a basic running shoe that is quite supportive and not too expensive, then the ASICS GT-1000 4 might be what you are looking for. Female heel-strikers may want to look into the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 more than the ASICS GT-1000 4, though.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
