NEW! ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 vs. Hoka One One Clifton 3

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 and the Hoka One One Clifton 2 are both neutral cushioning running shoes, which are known to be cushy.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Both the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the Hoka One One Clifton 2 implement no-sew overlays in their uppers to keep things light while still offering some structure to keep your foot in place.

Both Hoka One One Clifton 2 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 do not have many stitches in their uppers other than along the saddle and at the back of the shoe.

At the back, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 adds additional support with its external heel counter. The Hoka One One Clifton 2 does not have such a heel counter but the overlays should provide enough support there.

The forefoot of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 is more open and free than that of the Hoka One One Clifton 2 so might also feel more comfortable, especially around the bunion window.

All in all, you can expect to get a similar amount of support from the upper of either running shoe with the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 offering more support toward the back of the shoe compared to the Hoka One One Clifton 2.

The midsoles of both the Hoka One One Clifton 2 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 provide heel-to-toe cushioning and they are meant to be cushy running shoes.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 comes with two layers of midsole foam with GEL cushioning between those two layers to soften your landing and toe-off phase.

The Hoka One One Clifton 2 comes with one main layer of foam. The midsole of the Hoka One One Clifton 2 is overall a bit thicker than that of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18. The only exception is the men's heel of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18, which is slightly thicker than that of the Hoka One One Clifton 2.

The thickness of the midsole can have an impact on the cushioning as well as on the flexibility of a running shoe.

Running shoe lab tests show that the Hoka One One Clifton 2 is an overall very cushy running shoe for both men and women. In fact, it provides a maximum amount of cushioning that is hard to beat by other running shoes, including the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 is also overall quite cushy for women and almost reaches the amount of heel cushioning provided by the Hoka One One Clifton 2, since the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 has 3 mm of extra height in the heel to take stress off the Achilles tendons of women.

The amount of forefoot cushioning delivered by the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 is not to the max but comes close to the amount found in the Hoka One One Clifton 2.

This is also the case for men, where the amount of forefoot cushioning in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 is also almost to the max. However, there is a big difference to be noted in the amount of heel cushioning.

The heel of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 delivers above average cushioning but cannot tip the amount found in the Hoka One One Clifton 2.

The other side of providing lots of cushioning is having a stiff running shoe. Not surprisingly, the Hoka One One Clifton 2 comes out as being stiff in running shoe lab tests. It compensates for its stiffness by having a toe-off roll that can rock you forward despite the stiffness of the running shoe.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 is also quite stiff for men but somewhat more flexible for women.

The Hoka One One Clifton 2 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 are neutral running shoes so not meant to provide any kind of support.

However, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 does add some support to your runs through the use of a midfoot shank that consists of two separate pieces under the midfoot.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 also helps you achieve a more efficient gait through the implementation of a vertical flex groove.

The Hoka One One Clifton 2 adds stability to your runs by providing full ground contact and more ground contact than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 provides.

In addition, the platform of the Hoka One One Clifton 2 is broad and flat, which adds more stability to the running shoe.

All in all, running shoe lab tests indicate that the Hoka One One Clifton 2 is the more stable running shoe of the two.

The outsoles of the two running shoes differ quite a bit due to the amount of ground contact provided but also due to the fact that the Hoka One One Clifton 2 does not have much rubber under it. This keeps the shoe light but makes it less durable than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18, which has large slabs of rubber under it.

The women's version of the Hoka One One Clifton 2 weighs approximately 7.3 oz (207 grams) and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 for women weighs 9.8 oz (278 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 9.0 oz (255 grams) and 2.1 oz (343 grams), respectively, with the Hoka One One Clifton 2 being the lighter one.

If you are a neutral runner who is looking for a lightweight running shoe that offers a very soft ride in addition to some stability, you may want to look into the Hoka One One Clifton 2.

And if weight is not an issue for you, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 is a good option for a running shoe that provides a plush and comfortable ride.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
