ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 vs. 19 review

ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 delivers a soft and comfortable ride to neutral runners and underpronators. ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 sports a new upper and midsole technology.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 is the updated version of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18, which is a running shoe that provides lots of cushioning to neutral runners and underpronators.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com has changed its upper quite a bit compared to the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18.

While the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 still minimizes the amount of stitches in the upper just like the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 to minimize irritation points, the position of the overlays and the structure of the mesh has changed a bit.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com has most of its no-sew overlays placed from the midfoot backwards with a minimum amount of overlays around the bunion window and some overlays at the front.

This allows the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 to provide a bit of room to bunions and in the toe box overall.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19, on the other hand, comes with strategically placed no-sew 3D printed overlays throughout its entire upper and has some overlays at the front that are a bit elevated on the medial side.

In addition, the type of mesh used by the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 is strategically tightened or loosened in zones. At first glance, the zones that are loose are minimal in the forefoot, and bunions do not seem to get lots of room.

Therefore, the toe box of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 could feel a bit tight to some runners.

At the back, both the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 come with an external heel counter to provide extra support behind the heel, and this heel counter is topped by stitches in the overlays for extra durability.

All in all, both the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 should be able to keep your foot on the platform, but the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 might provide a more secure and tighter fit, while the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 might provide a bit more comfort, especially in the toe box.

Both the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 come with a midsole that consists of two layers of foam with GEL cushioning between these two layers in the heel and in the forefoot, so that has not changed.

The top layer is the softer layer of foam and the bottom layer is the more responsive one.

In the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19, the bottom layer has a new technology (FlyteFoam) implemented that is supposed to provide a more responsive ride with bounce back.

Both the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 and 19 for women come with an extra 3 mm of height in the heel to take stress off the Achilles tendons of women.

This extra height also tends to increase the amount of heel cushioning provided by the ASICS GEL-Nimbus to women compared to the amount of heel cushioning provided to men, who generally tend to get an amount that lies just above average.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 do not provide any kind of corrections, because they are meant to be worn by neutral runners who do not need any kind of support.

However, they both come with a midfoot shank that consists of two parts under the midfoot so provide a bit of support on both the lateral and medial side under the midfoot.

The midfoot shank under the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 looks a bit different from the one under the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18, but this should not have a big effect on the functionality of the midfoot shank.

Both the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 come with a classic ASICS outsole that displays a good amount of separation with large slabs of rubber and a vertical flex groove that helps with gait efficiency.

The vertical flex groove of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 is a bit shorter than that in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18, and the frontmost flex groove is missing its middle piece in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19, so the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 has one flex groove less than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18.

Because the ASICS GEL-Nimbus tends to provide lots of forefoot cushioning, it tends to not provide as much flexibility in general.

The women's version of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 weighs about 0.3 oz (9 grams) less than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 for women.

The men's version of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 also weighs about 0.3 oz (9 grams) less than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 for men.

While the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 looks largely similar to the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 on the outside, there have been enough technology changes to affect the way the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 would feel on your feet compared to the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18.

In addition, ASICS has announced that the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 runs a half-size smaller than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18, and therefore recommends sizing up a half-size to get a comparable fit.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
