ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 vs. ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 review

ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 provides softness, comfort, and a touch of stability to overpronators. ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is a trainer that provides a good amount of comfort and cushioning.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 fall in two different categories of running shoes, with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 serving neutral runners to overpronators, and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 serving underpronators to neutral runners.

ADVERTISEMENTS

So the common crowd for the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com are neutral runners.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is also supposed to be more luxurious than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18.

As far as the upper goes, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 has more no-sew overlays than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com, especially around the midfoot.

The upper of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 has been kept light with very little overlays, and the mesh helps keep things together a bit with the structure that it has.

What the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 has that the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 does not is an external heel counter that adds extra support behind the heel.

Other than that, both running shoes should feel comfortable and provide enough support to keep your foot on the running platform.

While the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is meant to be a plush running shoe that provides quite a bit of cushioning, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is meant to be a basic running shoe that provides enough cushioning.

Both running shoes come with a midsole that consists of two layers of foam with GEL cushioning in the heel and in the forefoot.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 even exposes more GEL than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 on the lateral side of the forefoot.

This would make one believe that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is more cushy than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18.

However, running shoe lab tests show the opposite, that is, that the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is more cushy than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 for both men and women.

For women, both running shoes are quite cushy in both the heel and the forefoot, but the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is just a tad more cushy than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 in both the heel and the forefoot despite the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 coming with an extra 3 mm in the heel to take stress off the Achilles tendons of women and add extra cushioning under the heel.

For men, the difference in cushioning between the two running shoes is much greater.

While the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 provides an amount of cushioning that is above average in both the heel and the forefoot, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 for men provides far above that amount.

The conclusion is that the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 can provide both men and women with a soft ride and is a good running shoe for heel-strikers.

The biggest difference in the midsoles of the two running shoes can be found on the medial side, where the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 has a support system in place and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 does not.

However, both running shoes come with a midfoot shank although the midfoot shank of the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 does not connect its two sides, while that of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 does.

This indicates that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 provides some degree of correction, while the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 does not. This is in line with the types of runners they serve.

Running shoe lab tests rate the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 as providing an amount of stability that is just above average, while the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 has been placed a couple of notches above that.

So according to running shoe lab tests, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is the more stable running shoe of the two, which is quite surprising (to me).

What does not differ much between the two running shoes is the way their outsoles look; they both have a classic ASICS outsole separation between their rubber compartments.

However, the similar amount of flex grooves and rubber placement does not translate to a similar amount of flexibility.

For men, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is very flexible and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is flexible but a bit less so than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18.

For women, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is very flexible, and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is flexible but much less so than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

The women's version of the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 weighs about 9.4 oz (266 grams), and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 for women weighs 9.4 oz (266 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 11.6 oz (329 grams) and 11.5 oz (326 grams), respectively, with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 being the lighter one.

If you are a neutral runner who is looking for a soft ride, you could choose either the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 or the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

If you are a mild overpronator, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 would be the running shoe to turn to. If you need a lot of pronation control, you may want to look into a different running shoe.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is a running shoe that is constructed with premium materials, which is reflected in its price. The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is a basic running shoe that provides everything you need at a more affordable price.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
