ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 vs. ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 review

ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 provides softness, comfort, and a touch of stability to overpronators. ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 increases the amount of comfort and support around the heel.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 is the updated version of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23, which is a premium stability running shoe from ASICS.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The upper of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com has changed a bit compared to the upper of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

Both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 come with an upper that does not have many stitches.

The midfoot and forefoot of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 are mostly held together by the ASICS logo that functions as a no-sew overlays around the midfoot and by the mesh that has a structure and is tightened in some areas for added support.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 has the ASICS logo on the lateral side that holds some of the mesh together but less so than in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

And on the medial side, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 is missing the no-sew overlays that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 has on that side.

Instead, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 implements underlays around the midfoot to increase the amount of support, and just like the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 makes use of mesh that has structure.

Both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 come with a toecap that does not have stitches, so the amount of durability at the front is about the same.

What has undergone a big change is the external heel counter. This heel counter seems to be a bit sturdier in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 and extends a bit further toward the midfoot than the external heel counter on the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

All in all, you should be able to get a comfortable fit from either the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 or the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24, but the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 might provide a bit more support around the midfoot, while the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 might feel a bit more secure behind and around the heel.

In addition, due to the coverage of the external heel counter on the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24, it might be able to prevent heel rotation more than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23. This helps to control the overpronation experienced by runners who need stability and support.

The midsoles of both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 consist of two layers of foam with GEL cushioning between those two layers in the heel and in the forefoot. The amount of GEL pods seems to be the same in the two running shoes.

The two running shoes more or less make use of the same midsole technologies, which includes having a system on the medial side and a midfoot shank to increase stability and add support.

The midfoot shank has not really changed under the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24. It still connects the lateral and medial sides and looks like the one used under the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

What has changed is the lasting of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24. The lasting was changed to one that increases the softness and comfort of the platform. The platform of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is more focused on providing plush comfort and moisture management.

The women's version of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 still implements a 3 mm higher heel to take some stress of the Achilles tendon.

The rubber outsoles of the two running shoes look identical down to the last flex grooves. This also means that they both implement a vertical flex groove that is supposed to help with gait efficiency.

According to running shoe lab tests, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is a flexible running shoe, and due to minor changes in the midsole and outsole, this should not change much in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24.

The women's version of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 weighs approximately 9.4 oz (266 grams), and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 for women weighs 9.3 oz (264 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 11.5 oz (326 grams) and 11.3 oz (320 grams), respectively, with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 being the lighter one.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 24, just like the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23, is meant to offer a soft ride to overpronators who need a moderate amount of stability and support.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 24 tries to provide an increased amount of comfort, a better fit, and more stability starting from the back of the shoe.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
