ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 provides a very cushy and protective ride for long runs. ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 does the same with a touch of stability and support added for overpronators.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 are both ASICS top-of-the-line running shoes in their categories. The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 provides maximum comfort to overpronators, while the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 provides the same to neutral runners.

The no-sew overlays in both running shoes tend to connect the saddle to the midsole to provide a good wrap around the midfoot. This connection is perhaps better in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17, since it has more overlays.

Another difference is that the FluitFit overlays tend to wrap your foot like a glove in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17. The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has less of such overlays, but its mesh provides enough structure to give a similar effect, albeit a bit looser than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17.

All in all, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 should give you a closer-to-foot feel than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22. At the back of the shoes, you should get enough support from both running shoes and a good lock down behind the heel from their external heel counters.

Both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 provide heel-to-toe cushioning through their midsoles that consist of two layers of foam with GEL cushioning in between those two layers in both the heel and the forefoot.

The amount of GEL cushioning seems to be more generous in the forefoot of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 than in that of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22, since the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 has three pods of GEL compared to two in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

According to running shoe lab tests, this difference exists for the women's running shoes where the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 is a bit more cushy in the forefoot than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22. The difference is not noticeable in the men's running shoes.

The difference in amount of heel cushioning is also minimal for men, but the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 turns out to be a bit more cushy in the heel than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 for women.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 is meant to provide support to overpronators, which it does through the implementation of an area of firmer foam on the medial side of the midsole. This type of support is absent from the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17.

The support system of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 includes a midfoot shank that connects the lateral side to the medial side. While the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 also have a midfoot shank to provide midfoot integrity, it does not have a connection between the two sides.

This again is an indication of the amount of support provided by the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

However, the amount of support provided by the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 is not to the extreme, which is why the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 could also be worn by neutral runners who need just a little bit of support.

The rubber outsoles of the two running shoes look alike, because they are both from ASICS. They both have a vertical flex groove that helps with gait efficiency and a good amount of separation between the rubber compartments for shock absorption and dissipation.

They also both have the same amount of horizontal flex grooves in the forefoot. The only difference is that the frontmost flex groove is unobstructed in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 compared to the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17, but this should not have a big impact on flexibility.

And indeed, according to running shoe lab tests, both running shoes are almost equally flexible for men. There is a bigger difference in flexibility for women with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 turning out to be the more flexible one.

The women's version of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 weighs approximately 10.0 oz (283 grams) and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 for women weighs 9.6 oz (272 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 11.3 oz (320 grams) and 11.6 oz (329 grams), respectively, with the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 being the lighter one.

When looking at the profile of shoe properties, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 for men resembles the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 with a slight addition of stability features.

This is not surprising, because just like the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 can also be worn by neutral runners.

It is when you look at the women's versions of the running shoes that you notice some differences with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 sitting in a more favorable position with its increased heel cushioning and flexibility compared to the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17.

But if you are an overpronator who needs a moderate degree of support, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 would be the one to consider.
