The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 fall in the stability category of running shoes and are both geared toward mild to moderate overpronators. The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 is two versions newer than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The upper of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 is quite different from that of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 mainly in the amount of overlays used.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 offers a good amount of support around the midfoot through the use of stitched-on overlays and there are more of such overlays on the medial side than on the lateral side.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com has no-sew overlays wrapping the midfoot. No-sew overlays are generally less supportive than stitched-on overlays.

However, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has a stitched-on overlay that pulls the top of the saddle toward the back of the shoe and midsole, so the amount of support is more concentrated at the back of the running shoe.

Another difference in the upper is the use of FluidFit no-sew overlays. These overlays run between the sturdier stitched-on overlays in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 to provide a glove-like fit.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 implements FluidFit in light no-sew overlays and in the mesh itself, which is structured to provide a customized fit and hold.

Both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 have an external heel counter at the back to provide a good amount of support behind the heel.

All in all, one could say that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 provides a more secure and perhaps tighter fit than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 but that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 might feel a bit looser and perhaps more comfortable.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano is known to give runners a soft and plush running experience. This has not changed much from version to version.

However, because the running shoe technologies have evolved, there will be differences to be noted between the running shoes.

Both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 have two layers of foam with GEL cushioning between those two layers. This has not changed throughout the years.

Running shoe lab tests show that both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 are almost equally cushy in both the heel and the forefoot of the women's version of the running shoes.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has just a tad bit more heel cushioning than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 but both are almost to the max. The ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 has just a little bit more forefoot cushioning than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 but both have very cushy forefeet.

The cushioning profile is a bit different for men with both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 having a cushy forefoot, and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 outcushioning the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 in the heel, which may feel somewhat firm to men. The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 displays a well-balanced cushioning profile.

Both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 are meant to provide support to overpronators and do so through the implmentation of a support system on the medial side of the midsole.

The main difference that can be spotted between the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 is the size of the midfoot shank in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 that hooks into the midsole and takes up a larger area than the shank in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

This might make the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 just a tad more supportive than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22, which has also been graded as such through running shoe lab tests. Other than that, the two running shoes look pretty similar.

The rubber outsole of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 looks quite similar to that of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 apart from some extra separation on the insides of the heel.

The flex grooves are also cut better in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 than they are in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20, especially where the frontmost flex grooves is concerned.

This does not affect the flexibility of the shoe much, though, because running shoe lab tests show that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 is the more flexible running shoe of the two.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 displays a good amount of flexiblity but cannot tip the amount provided by the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20, especially for men.

The women's version of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 weighs approximately 9.5 oz (269 grams) and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 for women weighs 9.6 oz (272 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 11.2 oz (318 grams) and 11.6 oz (329 grams), respectively, with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 being the lighter one.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano has evolved during the years and has moved toward using lighter and less overlays in its upper. Herein lies the biggest difference between the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

If you are a moderate overpronator who is looking for a very soft ride, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 might do a better job than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20, especially if you are a male runner.

And if you are looking for a more secure fit, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20 would be the one to consider above the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
