ASICS GEL-Forte vs. ASICS GT-2000 3 review

ASICS GEL-Forte provides maximum support to severe overpronators. ASICS GT-2000 3 provides a comfortable and stable ride with exceptional cushioning. But there is more...

The ASICS GEL-Forte and the ASICS GT-2000 3 are running shoes that fall in two different categories. The ASICS GEL-Forte is for moderate to severe overpronators, while the ASICS GT-2000 3 can be worn by neutral runners to runners who moderately overpronate.

The uppers of both the ASICS GEL-Forte and the ASICS GT-2000 3 consist of a combination of breathable mesh with synthetic overlays.

While the upper of the ASICS GEL-Forte consists entirely of stitched-on overlays, the upper of the ASICS GT-2000 3 has a combination of stitched-on and welded-on overlays.

The welded-on overlays can be found on the lateral side of the shoe and the stitched-on overlays on the medial side of the shoe where support is generally needed most.

Another difference is that the ASICS logo sits pretty far back on the ASICS GT-2000 3 firmly pulling the top of the saddle towards the back of the shoe.

And then there are overlays that run from the bottom of the saddle towards the front of the shoe to provide good structure and support to the upper, while trying to avoid forefoot irritation.

Both running shoes make use of a Heel Clutching System at the back of the shoes to firmly keep your heel in place. Note that this heel counter is newer and lighter on the ASICS GT-2000 3.

Both running shoes should provide you with a firm lock down on the running platform. The only difference is that the ASICS GEL-Forte hugs mostly the midfoot and the heel, while the ASICS GT-2000 3 implements a uniform pull towards the back and the front of the foot in addition to locking the heel in place.

Both also provide enough room for bunions, although the bunion window is more generous and "open" in the ASICS GT-2000 3.

The ASICS GEL-Forte and the ASICS GT-2000 3 have a similar midsole in that both have the Dynamic DuoMax Support System in place to provide support to overpronators.

The midfoot shank has been updated in the ASICS GT-2000 3 and if you look on the medial side of the shoe, you can see that it extends into the midsole to stiffen the midsole, so that it can stop your foot from rolling in too far inward.

The ASICS GEL-Forte also has such a feature with the midfoot shank occupying a larger portion in the midsole on the medial side. So the degree of pronation control is expected to be a bit stronger in the ASICS GEL-Forte.

The biggest difference in the midsole lies in the amount of cushioning. Because the ASICS GT-2000 3 has a FluidRide midsole that has cushioning and bounce back properties, and implements a generous amount of GEL cushioning in the heel – the GEL is clearly visible on the lateral side of the heel – and the forefoot, the ASICS GT-2000 3 should feel much softer under your foot than the ASICS GEL-Forte.

The ASICS GEL-Forte is a much firmer shoe, typical of a walking shoe or a shoe that heavy runners who need lots of support would benefit from.

The rubber outsoles of the two running shoes are similar in that both implement a Guidance Line vertical flex groove, although it has been updated in the ASICS GT-2000 3, and both running shoes have a separation between the forefoot and the rearfoot with a midfoot shank in between.

When you look at the outsoles you can see that the ASICS GEL-Forte has a much wider heel than the ASICS GT-2000 3, so the platform is more stable to stand on.

Both running shoes have horizontal flex grooves in the forefoot for added flexibility, and while both running shoes should provide you with a similar amount of flexibility on the lateral side of the forefoot, the medial side of the ASICS GT-2000 3 might feel just a little bit more flexible than that of the ASICS GEL-Forte, due to a more optimal rubber configuration in that area.

The rubber lugs under the heels of the ASICS GT-2000 3 and the ASICS GEL-Forte are well segmented to absorb and dissipate shock. But those under the ASICS GT-2000 3 are much smaller and more segmented, so you can expect smoother landings from the ASICS GT-2000 3 than from the ASICS GEL-Forte.

The women's version of the ASICS GEL-Forte weighs approximately 10.8 oz (306 grams) and the ASICS GT-2000 3 for women weighs 9.1 oz (258 grams). The men's versions of the shoes weigh 13.3 oz (377 grams) and 11.1 oz (315 grams), respectively.

The ASICS GT-2000 3 is a much newer and lighter running shoe than the ASICS GEL-Forte, so naturally implements better and more efficient technologies. Therefore, it matches or exceeds several qualities of the ASICS GEL-Forte, and provides you with much more protection from the road.

Fact remains however that the ASICS GEL-Forte was built with severe overpronators in mind. And although the ASICS GT-2000 3 provides as many stability features as the ASICS GEL-Forte, the ASICS GEL-Forte would still be suitable for heavier runners who require a stable and firm platform to run on.

But if your degree of overpronation is not that extreme and you are looking for a good amount of cushioning, then the ASICS GT-2000 3 would be worth looking into.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
