ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is a basic trainer that provides a good amount of comfort and cushioning. ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 delivers a soft and comfortable ride to neutral runners.

NEW! ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 vs. ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 and ASICS GEL-Cumulus 20 vs. ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 fall in the neutral cushioning running shoes category and can be worn by neutral runners and underpronators.

They are not running shoes that are meant to provide stability and support but rather comfort and a soft running experience.

The biggest difference between the two running shoes is that the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 The preceding link takes you to is meant to provide a luxurious feel, while the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is meant to provide the basics.

The uppers of the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 The preceding link takes you to and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 differ a bit in construction.

While both come with no-sew overlays in their uppers to increase the amount of comfort and decrease irritation points, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 provides more open spaces so has narrower overlays than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18.

These overlays also stretch along with the mesh to provide a more custom fit.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 comes with quite a bit of no-sew overlays that are centered over the midfoot to give you a good amount of support in that area; the forefoot has been kept quite open and free.

While the overlays are narrower on the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18, they are more widespread throughout the upper so may offer a more glove-like fit than the overlays on the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18.

Another difference is that the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 comes with an external heel counter to provide extra support behind the heel.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 does not come with such a heel counter, but you should still get enough support behind the heel.

The midsoles of the two running shoes are quite similar in that they consist of two layers of foam with GEL cushioning between those two layers.

The GEL is also placed similarly in both running shoes, especially on the lateral side under the heel where it has been brought closer to the foot.

However, when you look at the lateral side of the midsole, you will see that the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 exposes more of its GEL cushioning in the forefoot than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 does.

This is a good indication of the amount of cushioning you can expect to get from the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18, which according to running shoe lab tests, is quite cushy in both the heel and the forefoot for women.

The latter is probably due to the fact that the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 comes with an extra 3 mm of height in the heel to take stress off the Achilles tendons of women. The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 does not come with such a feature.

However, running shoe lab tests still show minor differences between the heel and forefoot cushioning of the two running shoes for women. The cushioning profiles are almost the same for women.

There are larger differences to be noted for men, with both running shoes having a very cushy forefoot, but with the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 delivering more heel cushioning than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18.

Other than those differences, the midsoles of the two running shoes look very much alike.

They both also come with a midfoot shank that consists of two separate pieces under the midfoot. This midfoot shank is to maintain integrity and add a bit of support under the midfoot but is not intended to provide any corrections although running shoe lab tests rate the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 as being the more stable one of the two.

Both the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 come with the Guidance Line vertical flex groove that helps you achieve a more efficient gait.

Similarities continue in the layout of the rubber in the outsole that is well-spaced for shock absorption and dissipation. The amount and locations of the flex grooves are also similar.

In terms of flexibility, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 turns out to be the more flexible one for both genders, according to running shoe lab tests. The difference in flexibility between the two running shoes is greater for men than it is for women, though.

The women's version of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 weighs about 9.8 oz (278 grams), and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 for women weighs about 9.4 oz (266 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 12.1 oz (343 grams) and 11.6 oz (329 grams), respectively, with the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 being the lighter one.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 are two running shoes that look very much alike in what they provide to neutral runners.

The main difference is the type of materials used in the upper and in the running shoe. For example, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 comes with a much more premium sockliner and has a FluidFit upper.

So if you are a neutral runner who is looking for a plush running experience, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 would be the one to look into, except for men, who may prefer the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 for its overall softer ride.

And if you just want a basic running shoe that is priced lower than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 but delivers everything you need to get a comfortable ride, you could look into the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18.
