ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 vs. 19 review

ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is a basic trainer that provides a good amount of comfort and cushioning. ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 sports a new and modern-looking upper.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 is the updated version of the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18, which is a neutral cushioning running shoe for runners who do not need much stability and support.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The uppers of both the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 are mostly seamless but contain a couple of stitches.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com has its stitches more at the back of the shoe around the heel, while the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 brings them a bit more forward to have them run from the top of the saddle toward the midsole next to the heel.

This means that the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 increases the amount of support around the midfoot, but because it has less no-sew overlays around the midfoot than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18, the two might balance each other out.

In addition, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 has an even distribution of overlays on the two sides of the midfoot, while the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 seems to have more overlays on the lateral side than on the medial side.

So in that respect, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 might provide a more secure fit.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 does not come with overlays on its toe box, other than the no-sew toecap at the front.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19, on the other hand, lets its overlays run from the midfoot to the top of the toe box and does not come with an external toecap.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 also seems to provide a bit more room than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 to big bunions.

All in all, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 has updated its upper compared to the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 and looks more modern, but the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 might still be the one that provides a more secure yet comfortable fit.

Both the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 have a midsole that consists of two layers of foam with GEL cushioning between those two layers in the heel and in the forefoot.

The construction of the midsoles looks identical down to the amount and placement of the GEL cushioning.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 offers a very cushy ride to men and women, and with the minor changes that ASICS has made to the midsole of the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19, one can expect the same of it. Why change a running shoe if it is already good, right?

The same thing can be said of the rubber outsole of the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19, that is, it looks identical to that of the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 down to the flex grooves and midfoot shank that consists of two separate pieces.

Both running shoes come with a vertical flex groove that is meant to help runners achieve a more efficient gait.

While the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 is not a stability running shoe, running shoe lab tests rate it as providing an above average amount of stability. This is most likely due to the midfoot shank.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 offers an average amount of flexibility to women and is somewhat more flexible for men.

Due to the similarities in the outsoles and the midsoles of the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18, one can expect a similar behavior of the two running shoes.

The women's version of the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 weighs approximately 9.4 oz (266 grams), while the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 for women weighs approximately 9.1 oz (258 grams).

The men's version of the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 weighs about 11.6 oz (329 grams), and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 for men weighs 11.3 oz (320 grams).

The minor weight difference between the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 can be attributed to the fact that the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 dropped some overlays from its upper.

Other than the changes in the upper, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19 has not changed much compared to the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18. Both make use of the same running shoe technologies.

If you are a neutral runner who is looking for a soft and comfortable ride, you could choose either the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 or the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 19.

The main difference between the two running shoes can be found in the upper, where the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18 provides a bit more coverage around the midfoot and support behind the heel.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
