NEW! Saucony Triumph ISO 3 vs. ASICS GEL-Kayano 23

The Saucony Triumph ISO 2 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 fall in two entirely different categories of running shoes with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 intended to provide a moderate amount of stability and support to overpronators and the Saucony Triumph ISO 2, cushioning to neutral runners.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Despite being a neutral cushioning running shoe, the Saucony Triumph ISO 2 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com provides quite a bit of support through its upper.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 2 comes with broad overlays that wrap the midfoot around sock-like mesh, while the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com has a couple of no-sew overlays connecting the saddle to the midsole and mesh that provides structure and lightweight support.

In that respect, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 provides a less secure fit around the midfoot than the Saucony Triumph ISO 2.

However, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 comes with a stitched-on overlay that connects the top of the saddle to the back of the shoe and the midsole.

Together with the external heel counter behind the heel, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 increases the amount of support toward the back of the shoe.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 2 also comes with an external heel counter that cups the heel well and provides support behind the heel.

Both running shoes have a pretty open forefoot that should feel comfortable although the forefoot of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 is likely to feel more comfortable than that of the Saucony Triumph ISO 2 due to the light overlays and mesh.

Both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 and the Saucony Triumph ISO 2 provide heel-to-cushioning and are meant to feel very plush under your foot.

This plushness is delivered through two layers of foam with GEL cushioning in the heel and forefoot of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22, and through a main layer with a top layer of softer foam and a heel insert in the Saucony Triumph ISO 2.

In addition, the women's version of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has 3 mm of extra height to take stress off the Achilles tendon. This extra height also helps the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 increase the amount of heel cushioning for women.

The latter is evident from running shoe lab tests, which show that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has a very cushy heel for women. The Saucony Triumph ISO 2 does not lag far behind, though, and also has a very cushy heel but not as cushy as the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

However, the Saucony Triumph ISO 2 turns out to have a very cushy forefoot and more cushy than the forefoot of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22, which lags just a small bit behind.

For men, the Saucony Triumph ISO 2 turns out be the more cushy running shoe of the two. And while the forefoot cushioning of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 comes very close to that of the Saucony Triumph ISO 2, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 lags a small bit behind in the heel cushioning area.

The main difference between the midsoles can be found on the medial side where the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has a support system in place to help stop your foot from rolling too far inward.

Together with a midfoot shank that connects the two sides of the shoe, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 delivers a moderate amount of stability and support.

The Saucony Triumph ISO 2 does not have any devices to provide pronation control. However, since it does provide more ground contact than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22, especially under the midfoot, it increases the stability of the running shoe as well as its potential of providing you with a smoother heel-to-toe transition.

Running shoe lab tests rate the amount of stability and support provided by the Saucony Triumph ISO 2 as lagging just a little bit behind the amount provided by the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

As far as flexibility goes, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 turns out to be the more flexible running shoe of the two for both men and women.

This might be caused by the fact that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has less forefoot cushioning than the Saucony Triumph ISO 2 and also flex grooves that run more efficiently from side to side.

Both running shoes have a good amount of separation in their outsoles so should also dissipate shock well to smoothen your ride.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 comes with a vertical flex groove that helps you achieve a more efficient stride and that is missing in the outsole of the Saucony Triumph ISO 2.

The women's version of the Saucony Triumph ISO 2 weighs approximately 8.6 oz (244 grams) and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 for women weighs 9.6 oz (272 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 10.4 oz (295 grams) and 11.6 oz (329 grams), respectively, with the Saucony Triumph ISO 2 being the lighter one.

If you are a moderate overpronator who is looking for an overall very soft ride, you could look into the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22. Women might be particularly pleased with what the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 offers.

And if you are a neutral runner who is also looking for a very soft ride with a light touch of stability from a running shoe that is relatively light, the Saucony Triumph ISO 2 might be able to give you that.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
