The Saucony Guide 9 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 are both stability running shoes that can be worn by runners who moderately overpronate.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The uppers of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the Saucony Guide 9 differ quite a bit.

The Saucony Guide 9 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com comes with a combination of stitched-on and no-sew overlays in its upper.

The more supportive stitched-on overlays wrap the midfoot to provide a good amount of support, while the no-sew overlays are located in the front part of the shoe to reduce the amount of irritation when the upper bends.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23, on the other hand, does not come with stitched-on overlays. It has some very light no-sew overlays wrapping the midfoot, and then there is structure in its mesh to also provide a bit of a hold.

Another difference is that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 has an external heel counter for additional support behind the heel, while the Saucony Guide 9 does not. The latter comes with sturdy stitched-on overlays at the back for added support.

Overall, the Saucony Guide 9 might deliver a bit more support through its upper, but the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 might feel a bit more loose and comfortable.

Both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 and the Saucony Guide 9 provide a good amount of cushioning to runners through their midsoles.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 does this through two layers of foam and GEL cushioning, while the Saucony Guide 9 has one layer of foam with an upper layer of softer foam just under the sockliner.

While the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is intended to be a plush running shoe, the Saucony Guide 9 is meant to be plush but not too plush.

However, according to running shoe lab tests, the Saucony Guide 9 delivers quite a bit of cushioning and even more cushioning than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

For women, the amount of heel cushioning is about the same in the two running shoes, but the Saucony Guide 9 provides almost a maximum amount of forefoot cushioning to women.

However, both running shoes provide above average cushioning to women and should feel overall quite cushy.

For men, the Saucony Guide 9 provides almost a maximum amount of both heel and forefoot cushioning. This amount cannot be rivaled by the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 for men, which provides just above average heel and forefoot cushioning.

Both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 and the Saucony Guide 9 are meant to provide some stability and support to overpronators.

The first stage of pronation control, which is the softening of initial impact, is delivered through GEL cushioning in the heel of ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 and through a crash pad that runs till the midfoot in the Saucony Guide 9.

The second stage of pronation control, which is the rolling in of the foot, is delivered through the use of firmer foam on the medial side of the midsole in both running shoes.

In addition, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 comes with a midfoot shank for additional midfoot integrity and support. The Saucony Guide 9 does not have a midfoot shank but rather provides full ground contact under the midfoot.

The amount of ground contact provided by the Saucony Guide 9 compared to that of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 helps increase the stability of the Saucony Guide 9 as well as give you a smoother ride.

The medial post of the Saucony Guide 9 is also quite long, and while it is difficult to see the area of support in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23, running shoe lab tests indicate that the Saucony Guide 9 provides much more stability and support than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

However, where the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 wins is in the flexibility department, because according to running shoe lab tests, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is much more flexible than the Saucony Guide 9 for both men and women, while the Saucony Guide 9 falls on the stiffer end of the flexibility spectrum.

The outsoles of both running shoes display a good amount of separation for shock absorption and dissipation and have a good amount of rubber for durability.

The women's version of the Saucony Guide 9 weighs approximately 8.2 oz (232 grams), and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 for women weighs 9.4 oz (266 grams).

The men's versions of the running shoes weigh 10.0 oz (283 grams) and 11.5 oz (326 grams), respectively, with the Saucony Guide 9 being the lighter one.

If you are an overpronator who is looking for a soft ride in addition to some stability and support, you could look into either the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 or the Saucony Guide 9.

However, if you want to increase the amount of stability, support, and cushioning while reducing the weight of the running shoe, the Saucony Guide 9 would be the first one to look into.

And if you are looking for a flexible ride, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 might be able to deliver that more than the Saucony Guide 9.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
