NEW! Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 vs. ASICS GEL-Kayano 23

The Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 are running shoes that are meant to offer runners a moderate degree of stability and support.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The uppers of the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 differ in that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has more no-sew overlays than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com has stitched-on overlays, but these are located only around the heel and pull the top of the saddle towards the midsole at the back of the shoe.

The Mizuno Wave Inspire 12, on the other hand, provides discrete support via the Mizuno logo that wraps the midfoot and sturdy overlays at the sides of the heel to more or less craddle the foot.

In addition, the toe box of the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 does not have any overlays running over it so is quite open and free.

This is similar to the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22, which provides structure through its mesh and keeps the fit not too tight despite having some no-sew overlays running over the toe box.

A final difference is that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has a sturdy external heel counter at the back and the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 does not. But the latter still provides enough support in that area.

All in all, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 is expected to deliver a more secure fit than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 due to its strategically placed stitched-on overlays, but the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 provides a better lockdown in the rear part of the shoe.

Both the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 and the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 provide heel-to-toe cushioning through their midsoles.

However, the ASICS GEL-Kayano has come to be known for its plushness, and it delivers this through two layers of midsole foam in addition to GEL cushioning in the heel and in the forefoot.

Running shoe lab tests reveal that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 is more cushy than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 but only in the heel where it is about 10-20% more cushy.

The forefoot cushioning is about the same in both the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 for both genders.

So if you are a heel-striker, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 may suit you better than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12, but please be aware that the amount of heel cushioning provided by the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 is above average so pretty good.

The Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 are stability running shoes that help stop your feet from rolling too far inward.

They do this by means of implementing a support system on the medial side of the midsole. This support system differs in the two running shoes.

The Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 implements a more non-traditional support system than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 by having a Wave Plate that runs in the heel and fans out on the medial side in two pieces and two waves to control overpronation.

Because the Wave Plate also provides shock absorption and has a centering effect on the heel, it can be seen as a very good stabilizing device.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has a more traditional support system that is implemented in the foam on the medial side with a midfoot shank that connects the lateral to the medial sides for extra support.

While the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 does not have a traditional midfoot shank, the Wave Plate runs till the forefoot to serve as a midfoot shank.

The rubber outsoles of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 and the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 look alike in that they have large flat slabs of rubber with some cuts in them.

However, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has more flex grooves than the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12. This benefits the flexibility of the shoe, since running shoe lab tests have shown that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 is the more flexible running shoe of the two.

One last difference is that the rubber compartment that runs on the medial side under the heel is longer in the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 than it is in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22, thereby adding to the stability and support provided by the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12.

The women's version of the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 weighs approximately 8.4 oz (238 grams), while the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 for women weighs approximately 9.6 oz (272 grams).

The men's version of the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 weighs about 10.8 oz (306 grams), and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 for men weighs 11.6 oz (329 grams).

If you are a mild to moderate overpronator who is looking for a very soft ride from a running shoe that has a comfortable fitting upper, you may want to look into the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

And if you are looking for a little bit more stability and support and a somewhat lighter running shoe that provides a secure fit, the Mizuno Wave Inspire 12 might be the one for you.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
