Brooks Ravenna 7 vs. ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 review

Brooks Ravenna 7 strikes a good balance between stabilty, cushioning, and comfort. ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 provides softness, comfort, and a touch of stability to overpronators.

NEW! Brooks Ravenna 8 vs. ASICS GEL-Kayano 23

The Brooks Ravenna 7 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 are both stability running shoes, but whereas the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is also listed as a running shoe that can be worn by neutral runners, the Brooks Ravenna 7 isn't.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Both the Brooks Ravenna 7 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 come with no-sew overlays in their upper.

However, whereas the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com only has no-sew overlays wrapping the midfoot, the Brooks Ravenna 7 comes with an extra band that pulls the saddle backward toward the midsole.

This extra band adds an additional layer of support and provides a more secure fit than only having overlays around the midfoot.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 implements mesh that has structure and minimizes the use of overlays, especially on the toe box.

The Brooks Ravenna 7 implements no-sew overlays on its toe box and is not as open and free as the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23, so the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 might feel a bit less restricted in the forefoot area.

Both running shoes provide a good amount of support behind the heel, but the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 comes with an external heel counter that really increases the amount of support at the back.

All in all, one could argue that the Brooks Ravenna 7 provides a more secure fit around the midfoot, but that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 provides more comfort and support at the back.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is a premium running shoe that is also meant to provide a good amount of cushioning to runners.

The Brooks Ravenna 7, on the other hand, is less concerned with cushioning and more concerned with stability and support.

However, when you look at the results from running shoe lab tests, the cushioning profile of the Brooks Ravenna 7 does not look too shabby. In fact, the Brooks Ravenna 7 can compete well with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

The Brooks Ravenna 7 offers a tiny bit more forefoot cushioning but less heel cushioning than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 for women.

Overall, both running shoes offer an above average amount of cushioning and can be seen as cushy running shoes, and women may enjoy less stress on their Achilles tendon with the extra heel height in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

Men will enjoy getting more heel cushioning from the Brooks Ravenna 7 but a tad less forefoot cushioning than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

Again, both running shoes offer an above average amount of cushioning to men and can be seen as somewhat cushy.

The big difference between the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 and the Brooks Ravenna 7 can be found in the amount of stability.

According to running shoe lab tests, the Brooks Ravenna 7 offers almost a maximum amount of stability, while the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 offers an amount that falls just above average.

Both running shoes have a support system on the medial side of their midsoles and midfoot shanks to increase the amount of support under the midfoot. However, the Brooks Ravenna 7 comes out on top.

The moderate amount of stability and support offered by the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 can be due to the fact that it is listed as a running shoe that can also be worn by neutral runners, so it serves runners who need some support (overpronators) and runners who do not need any support (neutral runners).

The Brooks Ravenna 7, on the other hand, is for overpronators only, which is reflected in lab test results.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 excels is in the amount of flexibility it provides to runners. According to lab tests, the Brooks Ravenna 7 is a bit on the stiff side, while the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is quite flexible for both men and women.

Both running shoes display a good amount of separation in their outsoles, and the Brooks Ravenna 7 is even a bit more separated and provides more ground contact than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 but still lacks flexibility.

The women's version of the Brooks Ravenna 7 weighs approximately 8.6 oz (244 grams), while the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 for women weighs approximately 9.4 oz (266 grams).

The men's version of the Brooks Ravenna 7 weighs about 11.0 oz (312 grams) , and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 for men weighs 11.5 oz (326 grams).

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 and the Brooks Ravenna 7 do not differ that much in cushioning, so you should be able to get a soft ride from either.

However, if you know that you are a runner who needs lots of stability and support, you may want to look into the Brooks Ravenna 7 before you consider the ASICS GEL-Kayano 23.

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 is good for runners who mildly overpronate and who are looking for comfort and a luxurious feel.
