The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 and the Brooks Transcend 3 fall in two different categories but share the fact that both aim to deliver a good amount of cushioning to runners.

ADVERTISEMENTS

The uppers of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 and the Brooks Transcend 3 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com also have lots of similarities.

They both try to minimize the amount of stitches, especially in the forefoot and midfoot areas, and they both provide a good amount of support behind the heel.

In addition, the uppers of both the Brooks Transcend 3 and ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com provide a good wrap around the entire foot while using very light no-sew overlays as in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 or layers of structured mesh as in the Brooks Transcend 3.

So whether you decide to run in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 or in the Brooks Transcend 3, you should be able to get a pretty comfortable ride with a minimum amount of irritation points and enough support.

While the Brooks Transcend 3 is geared toward runners who require stability and support, and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 is for neutral runners, both running shoes provide a lot of cushioning to runners.

The Brooks Transcend 3 does so through the use of a Super DNA midsole, and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 does so through the use of two layers of midsole foam and GEL cushioning.

According to running shoe lab tests, both the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 and the Brooks Transcend 3 provide a lot of forefoot cushioning to women, with the Brooks Transcend 3 providing just a tiny bit more than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18.

However, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 tends to have a very cushy heel, while the Brooks Transcend 3 provides a bit less than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 but still quite a lot.

The amount of heel cushioning in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 is thanks to the extra 3 mm of height in the heel of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 that is implemented to take stress off the Achilles tendons of women.

The extra 3 mm of heel height is missing in the men's version of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18, so there you will see that the Brooks Transcend 3 provides more heel cushioning than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18.

However, the amount of heel cushioning in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 is still above average.

In terms of forefoot cushioning, both the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 and the Brooks Transcend 3 have a very cushy forefoot, but again, the Brooks Transcend 3 provides a tiny bit more than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 for men.

While the Brooks Transcend 3 is supposed to be a running shoe that provides stability and support, it does not come with a traditional medial post like other stability running shoes do.

So in that respect, the midsole of the Brooks Transcend 3 looks very much like that of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18, except the fact that the Brooks Transcend 3 does not come with a midfoot shank but rather provides full ground contact under the midfoot.

However, the Brooks Transcend 3 does provide support through the use of, what's called, Guide Rails that run along the upper edge of the midsole.

These Guide Rails do not provide pronation control like other stability running shoes do but are meant to help your feet and body find their own natural motion path so thus also correct themselves.

This subtle amount of support offered by the Brooks Transcend 3 results in it providing a bit more stability and support than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18.

The rubber outsole of the Brooks Transcend 3 looks very different from that of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 mostly because of the separation between forefoot and midfoot in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 through the use of a midfoot shank that provides some support but no corrections.

The outsole of the Brooks Transcend 3 is also more separated and has smaller rubber pods than that of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18.

But despite all this, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 turns out to be more flexible than the Brooks Transcend 3 for both men and women but more so for women than for men, according to running shoe lab tests.

However, the amount of separation and ground contact offered by the Brooks Transcend 3 should help smoothen your ride more than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18.

The women's version of the Brooks Transcend 3 weighs approximately 9.2 oz (261 grams), while the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 for women weighs 9.8 oz (278 grams).

The men's version of the Brooks Transcend 3 weighs about 11.4 oz (323 grams), while the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 for men weighs 12.1 oz (343 grams).

If you are a neutral runner, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 would be the running shoe that was designed for you, but because of the subtle amount of stability and support offered by the Brooks Transcend 3, you could also try it out if you wanted a tad more stability and support.

If you are a moderate overpronator, it would be better to go with the Brooks Transcend 3 instead of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 because the former offers more stability and support than the latter.

Both running shoes are cushy, but if you are a man who wants lots of cushioning, you may want to try out the Brooks Transcend 3 before you do the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
