ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 vs. Brooks Ghost 7 review

ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 is known for its cushioning and the plush ride it provides. But Brooks Ghost 7 is not too shabby when its comes to cushioning and a smooth ride. Which one wins?

NEW! ASICS GEL-Nimbus 18 vs. Brooks Ghost 9 and ASICS GEL-Nimbus 19 vs. Brooks Ghost 10 and ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 vs. Brooks Ghost 10

The Brooks Ghost 7 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 are both neutral running shoes, so they are expected to have similar features.

The uppers of both running shoes are similar in that they consist of breathable mesh with overlays, and the overlays are a mixture of stitched and no-sew overlays.

While the overlays that wrap the midfoot are no-sew overlays on the Brooks Ghost 7, the ones on the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 contain stitches with seamless ones in the form of FluidFit in between the main overlays.

So the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 is expected to provide you with a much snugger and custom fit than the Brooks Ghost 7.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 has a Heel Clutching System that is broad and cups the heel better than the thickened overlays at the back of the heel of the Brooks Ghost 7.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus is known to be a very soft riding shoe and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 is no different. It has lots of heel and forefoot cushioning.

But surprisingly or not, the Brooks Ghost 7 equals the amount of heel cushioning in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16, but has a little bit less forefoot cushioning than the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16.

This has to do with the difference in cushioning technologies used in both running shoes. The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 has a FluidRide midsole that has bounce back and cushioning properties, combined with GEL cushioning in the heel and forefoot.

And the Brooks Ghost 7 has a BioMoGo DNA midsole where DNA adaptable cushioning has been blended into the midsole, in addition to a well-segmented crash pad around the bottom of the heel to provide you with soft landings.

And that is perhaps why the heel cushioning is about the same in both running shoes, but not the forefoot cushioning, where extra GEL in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 gives it an advantage over the Brooks Ghost 7.

The big differences in the Brooks Ghost 7 and the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 really lie in the outsoles of the two running shoes where the forefoot and heel are joined at the midfoot in the Brooks Ghost 7, and are separate but joined by a midfoot shank in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16.

So the Brooks Ghost 7 provides full ground contact, while the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 does not. This means that the transition from heel-to-toe might be smoother in the Brooks Ghost 7 than in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16.

Another difference between the outsoles is the size of the rubber lugs in the forefoot. These are much larger in the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 than they are in the Brooks Ghost 7. While large rubber lugs are more durable, they also mean less flexiblity. So not surprisingly, the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 will feel stiffer in the forefoot than the Brooks Ghost 7.

The segmentation and separation of the rubber lugs under the heel are also different, but you can expect the well-segmented heel of the Brooks Ghost 7 to absorb a bit more shock than that of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16. Do keep in mind however, that both provide the same amount of softness in the heel, so the difference in rubber lug separation should not affect how much protection you get.

The women's version of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 weighs approximately 9.7 oz (275 grams), while the Brooks Ghost 7 weighs approximately 8.5 oz (241 grams). The men's version of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 weighs about 11.9 oz (337 grams), and the Brooks Ghost 7 for men weighs 10.3 oz (292 grams).

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 is a heavier shoe than the Brooks Ghost 7. So if you are a heavier runner, looking for a custom fit, and a plush feel on the road from a durable running shoe, then the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 16 might be the shoe for you.

If on the other hand you are looking for a lightweight neutral running shoe that provides lots of heel cushioning and that is not that stiff, then the Brooks Ghost 7 might be able to fullfil your needs.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
