ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 provides a comfortable and soft ride to moderate overpronators. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 provides lots of stability and a smooth ride that is not too soft.

NEW! ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 vs. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 and ASICS GEL-Kayano 23 vs. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 17

The ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 and the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 fall in the same category of stability running shoes with the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 being on a higher end of stability and support than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Both the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 have a largely no-sew upper with some stitches towards the back or front of the shoes.

The no-sew overlays running over the toe box wrap the foot differently in the two running shoes with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 providing a slightly looser fit, especially on the bunion window.

The upper of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com also consists of multi-directional stretch mesh that flexes with your foot to provide a custom, but not necessarily tighter, fit.

Another difference is that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has a stitched-on overlay that runs from the midsole towards the top of the saddle, while the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 provides no-sew overlays in that area.

At the back, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has an external heel counter that cups the heel well to keep it in place. The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 just provides overlays with some stitches at the back, but you should get enough support there.

While you should be able to experience a comfortable fit when wearing either running shoe, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 may provide you with a more secure fit, especially towards the back of the shoe, and the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 may provide a slightly tighter fit especially in the front part of the shoe.

Both the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 provide heel-to-toe cushioning through their midsoles, but the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has extra GEL cushioning in its heel and forefoot to soften your ride even more.

The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 does not have GEL cushioning, however, it has a crash pad that runs along the entire outer length of the shoe, allowing it to provide you with smoother transitions from heel-strike to toe-off.

But if cushioning and softness is what you are after, running shoe lab tests indicate that the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 would be able to give you that, since the cushioning of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 lies somewhere in the middle, so is not too soft nor too firm.

What is surprising, though, is that the forefoot cushioning in the women's version of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 does not lag too far behind from that of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

However, whether you are a male or female heel-striker, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 would be the one that could soften your landings more than the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16.

Another difference in the midsole is the device used to control overpronation on the medial side of the midsole. This device runs higher in the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 and consists of several densities starting from the back of the shoe.

Therefore, the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 is expected to provide you with a stronger degree of pronation control than the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

The rubber outsoles of the two running shoes also differ considerably with the outsole of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 displaying a larger degree of separation than that of the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22.

The slabs of rubber in the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 are broad, which should make them last long. The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 has smaller, but more plentiful, rubber pods that should allow the shoe to dissipate impact well.

The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 also provides almost full ground contact under the midfoot, while the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 has a midfoot shank that prevents it from completely touching the ground, but that provides you with support.

In terms of the amount of flexibility provided, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 comes out as the more flexible running shoe according to running shoe lab tests.

However, if you are an overpronator who is a bit on the heavy side and who is looking for a good amount of support, you might not mind a somewhat stiffer running shoe like the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16.

The women's version of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 weighs approximately 9.5 oz (269 grams) and the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 for women weighs 9.6 oz (272 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 11.1 oz (315 grams) and 11.6 oz (329 grams), respectively, with the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 being the lighter one.

If you are an overpronator looking for a running shoe that provides lots of stability and support, a smooth ride, and that has cushioning that is not too soft or too firm, then the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 would be the one to look into.

And if you are an overpronator looking for a very soft and comfortable ride in addition to a moderate amount of stability and support, then the ASICS GEL-Kayano 22 could be the one for you.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
