ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 vs. Brooks Ghost 9 review

ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 is a good entry-level trainer that provides a soft ride to neutral runners. Brooks Ghost 9 provides a soft ride with a touch of stability to neutral runners.

NEW! Brooks Ghost 9 vs. ASICS GEL-Cumulus 18

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 and the Brooks Ghost 9 are neutral cushioning running shoes that are suitable for beginners and that are comparable to each other.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Both the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com and the Brooks Ghost 9 come with no-sew overlays in their uppers and especially around the midfoot.

However, the overlays on the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 are a bit more plentiful, and it has more overlays running from the saddle down to the midsole rather than parallel to the saddle and the midsole like in the Brooks Ghost 9 The preceding link takes you to Amazon.com.

The type of mesh used by the two running shoes also differ in that the mesh used by the Brooks Ghost 9 is structured in a way to reduce the need for overlays, especially on the toe box, where the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 also implements no-sew overlays.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 comes with a couple stitches at the back of the shoe, while the Brooks Ghost 9 does not but has a sturdy piece for additional support and an overlay that wraps around the heel.

The Brooks Ghost 9 comes with a couple of stitches at the front of the shoe, but they are barely noticeable.

Once you have considered everything, both running shoes can be said to provide an equal amount of support through their uppers although the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 might provide a more secure fit around the midfoot.

Neither the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 nor the Brooks Ghost 9 is meant to provide an excessive amount of cushioning to neutral runners.

However, this does not mean that they might feel firm under your foot.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 comes with two layers of foam with GEL cushioning to provide runners with a soft run.

The Brooks Ghost 9 has one main layer of foam with a crash pad that runs along the entire outer length of the running shoe.

This crash pad is quite well segmented and increases the stability of the running shoe in addition to giving runners smooth transitions from heel-strike to toe-off.

In terms of the amount of cushioning, running shoe lab tests show that the Brooks Ghost 9 provides a tad more heel cushioning than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 to both men and women, with both running shoes providing quite a bit of heel cushioning.

However, there are larger differences to be noted in the amount of forefoot cushioning provided.

For women, the Brooks Ghost 9 has a more cushy forefoot than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17, which provides an average amount of forefoot cushioning to women.

It is the other way around for men. For men, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 has a more cushy forefoot than the Brooks Ghost 9, but in this case, the Brooks Ghost 9 provides an above average amount of forefoot cushioning.

It is just that the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 provides quite a bit of forefoot cushioning to men. In fact, the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 provides a lot of cushioning to men when you look at both heel and forefoot cushioning.

The Brooks Ghost 9 has quite a balanced cushioning profile for women.

Neither the Brooks Ghost 9 nor the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 is meant to provide stability and support, because they are neutral running shoes.

However, as mentioned previously, the crash pad and amount of ground contact provided by the Brooks Ghost 9 increases the stability of the running shoe.

The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 comes with a midfoot shank that consists of two pieces at the sides under the midfoot that provides a bit of support but does not correct anything.

According to running shoe lab tests, the Brooks Ghost 9 is more stable than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17.

The rubber outsoles of the two running shoes look quite different in that the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 comes with large rubber compartments, while the Brooks Ghost 9 displays more separation with small rubber pods.

This separation can benefit the smoothness of your ride, but according to running shoe lab tests, it does not benefit the flexibility of the Brooks Ghost 9, because it turns out to be stiff for both men and women.

The flexibility of the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 differs between men and women, with women getting a very flexible ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17, and men getting a somewhat stiff ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 that is just a tiny bit more flexible than the Brooks Ghost 9.

The women's version of the Brooks Ghost 9 weighs approximately 9.0 oz (255 grams), and the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 for women weighs 9.3 oz (264 grams).

The men's versions of the shoes weigh 10.5 oz (298 grams) and 11.4 oz (323 grams), respectively, with the Brooks Ghost 9 being the lighter one.

If you are a neutral runner who is looking for a soft enough ride for long runs, you could go with either the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 or the Brooks Ghost 9.

For a more stable and smoother ride, you may want to look into the Brooks Ghost 9 more than the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17.

Men may want to look into the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 17 for a very soft and balanced ride, while women may want to turn to the Brooks Ghost 9 for the same.
