ASICS GT-2000 2 vs. ASICS GT-2170 review

ASICS GT-2000 2 provides a stable, light, and comfortable ride. It is an ASICS stability running shoe just like ASICS GT-2170, but then better. How much better? Read on...

NEW! ASICS GT-2000 5 vs. ASICS GT-2000 6

The ASICS GT-2000 2 is the replacement of the ASICS GT-2170 and the second edition of the ASICS GT-2000.

Both the ASICS GT-2000 2 The preceding link takes you to and the ASICS GT-2170 are stability running shoes, meaning that they are targeted towards runners who overpronate moderately.

However, they have been built to fit many runners and running styles, and are considered to be all-around athletic shoes.

To tackle pronation control, the ASICS GT-2170 The preceding link takes you to has DuoMax for support, while the ASICS GT-2000 2 consists of a midsole with Dynamic DuoMax, which enhances stability and support, while reducing weight and increasing platform support.

But when you compare the position of the medial post that controls overpronation, it has moved a little to the back in the ASICS GT-2000 2 compared to the ASICS GT-2170, meaning that the ASICS GT-2000 2 has eased off a bit where stopping inward rotation of your foot is concerned. This should give you a smoother transition to toe-off.

Staying with the midsole, both running shoes have GEL in the forefoot and in the rearfoot for cushioning and shock absorption. However, the rearfoot GEL in the ASICS GT-2000 2 extends a little bit more towards the midfoot than it does in the ASICS GT-2170. This means softer landings for runners who typically land more on the outsides of their heels.

However, the biggest difference between the midsoles of these two ASICS running shoes is in the type of material used. The ASICS GT 2000 2 has FluidRide in its midsole to give you bounce back, while the ASICS GT-2170 consists of SoLyte foam that is a light midsole foam that is durable and provides cushioning, but without the bounce back of FluidRide. So all in all, you should feel lighter when running in the ASICS GT-2000 2, and get more energy return from the shoe. In plain English, your workouts should feel easier.

Comparing the uppers of the ASICS GT-2000 2 and ASICS GT-2170, both running shoes consist of breathable mesh with synthetic overlays. The placement of the overlays has not changed much. However, the ASICS GT-2000 2 has two extra overlays that run from the top of your foot towards the back of the shoe, thereby nicely locking down that part of the foot on the platform.

In addition, while the heel of the ASICS GT-2170 is covered with overlays, those overlays are missing from the ASICS GT-2000 2, giving your heel a bit more freedom. But don't worry, there is still an overlay that runs across the top of the heel down towards the midsole to keep your heel firmly on the platform.

The composition of the outsoles of both the ASICS GT-2000 2 and the ASICS GT-2170 has not changed much. The rubber compartments are the same in amount and the flex grooves are located similarly, so flexibillity should feel the same or slightly better.

And while the Guidance Line is new in the ASICS GT-2000 2, the ASICS GT-2170 also has a vertical flex groove, although not as efficiently placed as in the ASICS GT-2000 2.

The Guidance Trusstic System, which enhances gait efficiency while providing midfoot structural integrity, is also missing from the ASICS GT-2170, so the ASICS GT-2000 2 should give you an overall smoother and more comfortable and supportive ride.

But since both shoes implement components of the Impact Guidance System, your stride should not be affected too much if you are looking to switch from the ASICS GT-2170 to the ASICS GT-2000 2.

The big difference in the outsole lies under the heel, where the rubber compartment at the back of the ASICS GT-2170 has increased a bit in size on the ASICS GT-2000 2 and moved a bit more towards the outside of the heel, and the rubber compartment on the medial side of the heel has increased in size. So again, if you tend to land more on the outsides of your heel, you should benefit from shock attenuation that the ASICS GT-2000 2 delivers in that area.

The women's ASICS GT-2170 weighs 9.3 oz (264 grams) compared to the 9.2 oz (255 grams) of the ASICS GT-2000 2. So the ASICS GT-2000 2 is 0.1 oz (3 grams) lighter than the ASICS GT-2170 for women.

The ASICS GT-2000 2 is a big improvement from the ASICS GT-2170 in comfort and cushioning. Your runs should feel more effortless in the ASICS GT-2000 2. However, if you are a runner who tends to roll a lot forward and push off with your big toe, the ASICS GT-2170 would be more suitable, or you can look into a shoe such as the ASICS GEL-Kayano 20.

Note: The weight of a running shoe depends on the size of the running shoe, so any weights mentioned in this review may differ from the weight of the running shoe you choose to wear. Running shoes of the same size were compared for this review.
