ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 vs. 9 review
Learn about how the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 compares to the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9 and what changes have been made by ASICS in going to the new running shoe version.
In two previous articles I wrote about the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9 and the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 running shoes.
Both ASICS motion control running shoes have a suggested retail price of US $100, and because the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 is the new version of the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9, it should not be expected to differ a lot from the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9.
The uppers have not changed much in going from the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9 to 10. The supportive layers are still placed in almost exactly the same spot, so you should not notice many or any differences there.
While not extreme, the placement of the DuoMax in the midsole has moved slightly forward towards the forefoot and away from the heel in the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10. So the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 should stop your feet from rolling inwards a bit later than the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9 did.
Because over pronation does not generally start at heel-strike, but as your foot is transitioning inwards, the placement of the DuoMax post should be considered an improvement. However, be aware that this could affect the way the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 feels on your feet and affect your running style if you have become accustomed to the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9; some running style adjustments may be required.
There has been some major restructuring in the outsole of the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 compared to the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9. The area below the big toe has gotten much firmer and a larger amount of durable rubber, so the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 should give you more mileage than the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9 if this area tends to be a high-wear area for you.
The outsole of the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 is also more segmented than that of the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9, meaning that it should absorb and dissipate shock better than the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9.
A major improvement is the segmentation in the heel area, which now consists of 3 separate crash pads and which is less linked to the forefoot area, so if you are a heel-striker, the shock of landing should not affect your transition to toe-off much if it ever did in the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9.
And finally, apart from outside to inside flexibility in the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10, you should now also experience a bit more flexibility on the lateral side of your forefoot. However, the medial side should feel a bit firmer than in the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9. But since the medial side is where the running shoe should stop you from over pronating, this is a good thing.
The ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 is much lighter than the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9 weighing in at 9.9 oz (281 grams) in the women's version of the running shoe. This makes the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 0.8 oz (23 grams) lighter than the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9 when you compare motion control running shoes by weight.
The suggested retail price of the ASICS GEL-Foundation 10 is US $100, which is the same price as the ASICS GEL-Foundation 9 when you compare motion control running shoes by price.
