ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 vs. ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 review
Learn about the difference between ASICS GEL Evolution 5 and 6 in this review, and find the cheapest motion control running shoe by comparing prices.
In two previous articles I reviewed the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 and ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 motion control running shoes for women.
The ASICS GEL-Evolution line of running shoes is the flagship ASICS motion control running shoe.
Because the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 is an upgraded version of the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5, these two athletic shoes should not differ much from each other.
Looking at the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 and ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 side-by-side gives a good comparison of the two motion control running shoes.
Starting with the uppers, there are a couple of differences to be noted. First off, while both ASICS running shoes consist of mesh, the overlays are slightly differently placed in addition to the fact that the overlays on the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 now consist of a soft suede that bends and moves along with your feet to help reduce buckling and irritation.
The ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 has more wrapping around the heel area and compared to the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5, there is an extra overlay on the medial side of the running shoe that runs from the bottom of the laces to the big toe and to the midfoot to help give you a more secure fit on the inside of the shoe.
Continuing on with the comparison between the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 and 6, the midsoles of both running shoes consist of the DuoMax Support System that helps stabilize your runs and control the degree of pronation.
The big difference between the midsoles of the two athletic shoes is the addition of 5 mm more midsole material on the medial side of the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 compared to the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5. This means that the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 should give you slightly more support than the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5.
In addition, the women's version of the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 has what is called Soft Top DuoMax, which is an extra softer layer of midsole material above the DuoMax Support System. And there is an addition 3 mm of midsole material to help relieve Achilles tension. This should make the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 more comfortable than the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 - at least for female runners.
Both the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 and ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 have GEL cushioning in the forefoot and rearfoot, so there are no big differences there.
And finally, the outsoles of the two sneakers differ a great deal in that the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 has a vertical flex groove that runs from the heel to the forefoot. This line is called a Guidance Line and it helps you generate a more effective gait cycle.
However, ASICS has maintained the amount of horizontal flex grooves as well as the crash pads on the heel in the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 compared to the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5, so both shoes should offer a similar amount of flexibility.
Both the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 and the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 have a similar amount of durable rubber on the outsole, although the amount is slightly higher on the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5, so it is expected to last a bit longer than the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6.
Where the women's running shoes are concerned, the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 weighs approximately 312 grams (11.0 oz), while the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 weighs 317 grams (11.2 oz), which makes it 5 grams (0.2 oz) heavier when you compare motion control running shoes by weight.
The ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 is a slight departure from the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 where tooling is concerned. The ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 not only offers more stability and support, but several comfort features have been added.
Despite the addition of more midsole material for added support, the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 only weighs 0.2 oz more than the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5. However, the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 may still reign superior where durability of the outsole is concerned.
And finally, the addition of Guidance Line in the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 should aid better in the transition from heel-strike to toe-off and give you a much more smoother ride than the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 would provide.
Both the ASICS GEL-Evolution 5 and the ASICS GEL-Evolution 6 come at a suggested retail running shoe price of US $120 when you compare motion control running shoes by price.
